Wilhelm was a member of the Circle of Magi who lived in the village of Honnleath. He was formerly the owner of Shale, although his status as a mage living outside the Circle with a son (which, according to head writer David Gaider[1], is prohibited for Circle mages) suggests that there might be more to his story than we currently know. According to Shale, Wilhelm was quite vain, and willing to scare the villagers to show off his power. He was fond of going into the Deep Roads in search of treasure, which is where he apparently found Shale, and had spells to get him out of trouble if he encountered darkspawn.

Involvement

The Stolen Throne

Both Wilhelm and Shale were part of the rebel army of Moira the Rebel Queen, and later, of Prince Maric Theirin, and fought against the Orlesian forces occupying Ferelden. Wilhelm appeared to hold some authority in the army, and provided healing magic for the troops, as well as twice magically testing Maric to confirm his identity.

Dragon Age: Origins

Both Wilhelm's son, Matthias, and Shale claim that Wilhelm was killed by Shale while he was tinkering with it. However, no one actually saw Shale kill him, and Shale has no memory of the event.

Entries in Wilhelm's journal reveal that he was researching a means to counter demonic possession. This would seem to explain the numerous demons bound within the basement of his tower, which Matthias describes as his father's "defenses." In his final journal entry, he states his belief that the Desire Demon he was interrogating was too dangerous to hold any longer, and that he could not discount the possibility that it was influencing Shale.
