Way of the Rift Mage is a side quest in Dragon Age: Inquisition. It is one of three potential quests which a mage Inquisitor can complete to obtain the Rift Mage specialization.
Assemble of Tome of Rifts, study rift magic, and Your Trainer will reveal the secrets of the Rift Mage specialization. Collect tomes from Venatori at Ghilan'nain's Grove, Halin'sulahn, and the Desolate Bank in the Exalted Plains. Readings can be found among the belongings of followers who share this discipline. Or, if unavailable, among the wares of the book merchant in Val Royeaux.
Acquisition
After moving to Skyhold, a war table operation Specializations for the Inquisitor becomes available. Completing this operation unlocks the specialization quests. Three potential trainers will arrive at Skyhold for the Inquisitor to choose one specialization. Talk to Your Trainer, located in the Lower Courtyard, to start the quest.
Walkthrough
The study of rifts is a recent phenomenon, but one that has almost unlimited potential. The rifts, and with them the Veil, represent the very fabric of the world. Those who would master rifts must reconcile their knowledge of magic with how the rifts operate. Each rift must be dissected and studied, and from that accumulation of information, a new college of magical study will be born.
Gather the following materials:
Location of Venatori tomes in the Exalted Plains.
Writing on rift magic can be obtained from the table at Solas' room in Skyhold or from merchant Willvan in Val Royeaux. Reading the writing unlocks Codex entry: Way of the Rift Mage.
Venatori Tomes are looted from Venatori in the Exalted Plains (actually, from any Venatori, such as from Dorian's One Less Venatori or even from spawning locations in the Hinterlands). They can be found at Ghilan'nain's Grove, Halin'sulahn, and the Desolate Bank. It may take multiple visits to the area in order to collect them all. They are also randomly sold by Griffon Wing Keep merchant in the Western Approach if you have The Short List Inquisition perk.
Ring Velvet is a common drop from Venatori and Freemen of the Dales forces in the Exalted Plains. It can also be obtained from the repeatable war table operation Gather Cloth with Josephine.
Craft the "Tome of Rifts" at any requisition table and bring it to Your Trainer to complete the quest and learn the Rift Mage specialization.
Notes
- All three specialization quests can be active at the same time, however, only one specialization can be chosen.
- Tomes can also be purchased from the Griffon Wing Keep Merchant in the Western Approach for 20
but it requires The Short List Inquisition perk.
Bugs
- It is possible to kill Venatori groups in Exalted Plains before acquiring this quest. When this occurs, Venatori do not drop needed tomes. However Venatori Tomes are a random drop and can be obtained from other Venatori in different locations of the game (e.g. in the Hinterlands during Dorian's quest One Less Venatori). It is advised to save the game before Dorian's quest to repeat it if the item doesn't drop.
