Way of the Assassin is a side quest in Dragon Age: Inquisition. It is one of three potential quests that a rogue Inquisitor can complete to obtain a class specific specialization.

Craft a proper knife, study the methods required to wield it, and Heir will reveal the secrets of the Assassin specialization. Kill guild leaders for their tokens at the East Side Hills, the Flats, and the Black Fens in Crestwood. Readings can be found among the belongings of followers who share this discipline. Or, if unavailable, among the wares of the book merchant in Val Royeaux.

Acquisition[]

This quest becomes available after the Inquisitor completes the main quest From the Ashes and relocates to Skyhold. The war table operation, Specializations for the Inquisitor, will appear after leaving Skyhold for the first time and returning. Completing the operation unlocks the specialization quests.

There are three potential trainers, one for each specialization, that will arrive at Skyhold to teach a rogue Inquisitor their specialization. Conversing with Heir, the Assassin trainer, will initiate the quest.

Walkthrough[]

The Inquisitor will need to craft the item: "Murder Knife" via the requisition recipe received.

Forged cold to match intent. A symbolic dagger not intended for combat, but it does produce a weapon. The process is an acknowledgment of purpose and commitment. The result is a killer, not a blade.

Gather the following materials:

Codex icon DAI Writing on Assassin's methods
Other Crafting Material Icon Assassin's Guild Leader Tokens (3)
Deathroot icon Deathroot (20)

Writing on Assassin's methods can be found near Cole in the Herald's Rest tavern. If Cole hasn't been recruited yet, the item can be purchased from Willvan in Val Royeaux; reading it unlocks Codex entry: Way of the Assassin.

For Assassin's Guild Leader Tokens the journal guides the player to Crestwood. However, you will get no further hints or quest markers. There are three small groups of bandits in different parts of the region with named leaders. These leaders will drop the Assassin Weapons.

Note: Killing the assassins before getting the quest, and looting them, might result in them not dropping the Assassin Weapons. However, there are other possible sources; see the Notes section below.

East Side Hills[]

Assassin-Leader-Location-2

To the north-west of the Village of Crestwood and the rift near the North Gate, there's a fisherman's shack at the shore of a lake. Here the Assassin Lady Sear can be found, waiting outside, and guarded by some Black Steel Scouts.

The Flats[]

Assassin-Leader-Location-1

You can find the Bombast and Carta guards west of New Crestwood, near the Fisherman's Shack landmark up on the hill above the ruins of Old Crestwood.

The Black Fens[]

Assassin-Leader-Location-3

South of the dam, west of the dragon encounter at a quarry is Fat Masters and some Outlaw Scouts. Rather than go past the dragon, if you're not a high enough level, go south from Caer Bronach towards the dam. To your left is a small wooden landing and ladder. Take the ladder down, and head south around the cliffside towards the quarry.

In Crestwood, the required Deathroot is only obtainable from the village merchant. If you don't want to spend money for it, you have to visit other areas, like the Western Approach or the Hissing Wastes, or let Leliana operate the latter's related resources mission.

Once all of the required materials have been gathered, craft the knife at any requisition table and return to Heir to learn the Assassin specialization and complete the quest.

Rewards[]

Choosing the specialization yields:

  • 512 XP
  • Influence 200
  • Power 2

Notes[]

  • The quest journal states that "Assassin Guild Leader Tokens" need to be completed, however the items that are looted will be labeled Assassin Weapons.
  • Actually these may randomly be looted from any hostile Double Daggers rogue, such as:
  • All three specialization quests can be active at the same time and their appropriate items crafted; however, only one specialization can be chosen.
  • Completing the quest will unlock the war table operation End once the Inquisitor reaches Influence level 8.
  • Other than having the writings laying around somewhere nearby, the companions cannot offer any additional information about their specialization.

Trivia[]

  • Only Dorian and Leliana will comment on the Inquisitor's new "profession", with the latter appreciating it and possibly mentioning an assassin and friend she once knew, Zevran.
  • Speaking again with Heir before crafting the Murder Knife will bring a derogatory comment.
