Warrior

Warrior is one of the three playable starting classes in Dragon Age: Origins. Warriors are the front-line fighters, the backbone of any party under assault. They rely on melee and ranged weapons, supplemented by powerful special abilities that draw from deep reserves of stamina. They can withstand and deliver a great deal of punishment, and have a strong understanding of tactics. All races can play as a warrior.

Class description

Class specific talents emphasize on the warrior's role at the front. Unlike the rogue (whose weapon talents are limited to Dual Weapon and Archery) and the mage (who is unable to specialize in weapons at all and may not perform well without sacrificing attribute points, unless specialising as an arcane warrior), warriors have access to all weapon talents which are categorized by weapon styles:

Class benefits for warrior: +4 strength, +3 dexterity, +3 constitution.

Level up benefits for warrior: +6 health, +5 stamina, +0.4 damage, +1 skill every 3 levels.

Specializations

Berserker

A berserker in battle

Berserkers are warriors who harness their anger in order to acquire tremendous strength and resilience in battle.

Background

Experienced warriors tell of the horrors of war, of steeling one's courage and fighting through pain and fear that would cripple lesser men. According to them, to give over to rage in battle is to hand victory to your opponents; anger clouds one's mind and forces a warrior to make foolish and often fatal mistakes. The deadly berserkers dare – for a berserker would never beg – to differ. To them, the only way to conquer the terror of war is to become that terror yourself.

Founded centuries ago first as a fighting tradition among the Warrior caste in Orzammar[1][2][3], the berserker philosophy is simple: embrace the rage, internalize the terror, and wreak horror upon the field of battle. When a berserker rages, finesse, precision, and honor cower in the face of pure violence and blades flash in a haze of red mist. While this makes berserkers unpredictable on the field, it also makes them terrifying to behold and even the vile and mindless darkspawn have been known to cower in the face of a squad of raging berserkers. However, berserkers have to be in peak physical condition and able to hold their rage when they are not in the battlefield.[1]

While berserkers make up a significant part of the dwarven warriors, the tradition was long ago taught to the Avvar barbarians in the Frostback Mountains and through them made its way to the Ash Warriors, who are themselves the most renowned mercenaries in Ferelden.[4] Ash Warriors operate using berserker fighting techniques but apply their own unique principles to its use. Ash Warriors accept no pay for their deeds and instead fight for causes they deem just and noble. They also battle with their trusted mabari hounds at their sides, a distinct departure from berserker tradition.[5]

  • Berserkers are fierce warriors who harness their inner rage to gain strength and health at a cost to finesse fighting.
  • This can be taught by Oghren, if his approval is high enough. A berserker manual can also be purchased from Gorim at his stall in Denerim.

  • Champions are warriors who are confident and skilled at leadership. Because of this they gain talents that inspire their allies and terrify their foes.
  • This is unlocked by curing Arl Eamon Guerrein and becoming the Champion of Redcliffe.

Reavers are warriors who unlock powerful abilities through the ritual drinking of draconic blood. It is believed that like blood magic, humanity learned how to harness this ability through Demons.

Background

Reavers are warriors who have unlocked a new level of control over their bodies. They command this untapped energy from deep within blood and bone. The Reaver path however is a double edge sword. The Reaver specialization trades pain for strength, by channeling their own life force into raw power and stealing the life from their foes. Reavers terrorize their enemies, feast upon the souls of their opponents and become more powerful as they begin to die. It is not so easy, however, to learn this gift, as it comes from the ritually prepared blood of a dragon.[1] Alternatively, wyvern blood may be used instead of a dragon's to achieve the same effect in the Reaver ritual.

Trivia

  • When Kolgrim hands the Warden the potion that unlocks the specialization, he states that the potion was made of wyvern blood, not dragon - although he may have simply used the word as a synonym. However, given that the wyverns are lesser cousins to dragons, it is possible that all species within the Dragon family are capable of unlocking reaver skills.
  • If the Inquisitor becomes a Reaver then Cassandra informs them the Pentaghast family used to be known for their Reavers. According to legend, the Reavers developed dragon-like attributes and terrible tempers, often killing their entire families. The tales may be exaggerated, but she considers it likely the stories are based on truth. Nyree, a reaver, is able to adopt a frightening appearance with dragon like qualities, suggesting there is some truth to the stories.
  • The term "reaver" is an archaic term for one who despoils, plunders, bereaves, or takes with violence. This may be a reference to both the taking of another life or flesh or the sacrifice of one's own, as described in game.

References

  • Reavers are terrifying fighters who are driven by the pain and fear of their enemies. They are created through an unknown method of ritual involving the person intending to become a reaver to drink dragon blood—similar to the Grey Warden Joining ceremony.
  • This is unlocked by defiling the Urn of Sacred Ashes. Once this is done, leader of the dragon cult, Kolgrim, teaches the specialization.

Templar Templar

  • Templars are a militaristic branch of the Chantry charged with policing mages. Because of this, they possess talents designed to withstand and dispel magic.
  • This can be taught by Alistair, if his approval is high enough. A templar manual is also available from Bodahn at the party camp.
