Vanedrin Theirin is a king of Ferelden who reigned during the Blessed Age and the father of King Brandel Theirin.[1]

Background[]

As a member of the Theirin family, Vanedrin was a descendant of Calenhad the Great, the first King of Ferelden. During his reign in 8:24 Blessed, the Orlesian Empire, under the rule of Emperor Reville, invaded Ferelden.[2] In the Battle of Lothering, Ardal Cousland, Teyrn of Highever, was slain defending the king.[3] Vanedrin was unable to successfully unite Ferelden against the invaders, as he died in the same year.[1]

King Vanedrin was killed in the Battle of Lothering when he fell off his horse.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Vanedrin offered knighthood to Rendor, also known as "the Mountain Terror," who is believed to have been an adventurer or mercenary hired to fight off the Orlesian forces trying to bypass the Frostback Mountains during the invasion, as well as deal with the enemy Avvar.[5]

Notes[]

  • Both The World of Thedas vol. 1 p. 124 and the description of the Shield of Highever call him Vanedrin. Dragon Age: Origins: Prima Official Game Guide Collector's Edition - Traveler's Guide p. 361, however, spells his name as Venedrin.
