The Valarian Fields are a plain in the northwestern Tevinter Imperium, on the coast of the Nocen Sea, at the foot of the High Reaches. The Imperial Highway crosses the Fields. It was the site of an important battle during the Exalted March against the Tevinter Imperium.

Background[]

The armies clash on Valarian Fields
At Shartan's word, the sky
Grew black with arrows.
At Our Lady's, ten thousand swords
Rang from their sheaths.
A great hymn rose over Valarian Fields gladly, proclaiming:
Those who had been slaves were now free.[1][2]

The Battle of Valarian Fields occurred in -171 Ancient. The Alamarri army under Andraste and Maferath's leadership advanced deeper into the Tevinter Imperium, emboldened by previous victories. They joined with elven forces made up of ex-slaves led by Shartan. The Battle of Valarian Fields was where they first faced significant difficulties fighting Tevinter, since they entered the heart of the Imperium. The battle proved bloody as the situation was changing rapidly from siege to open fighting. In the end, the Alamarri and elven forces emerged victorious.[3][4]

It is said that the southern forces managed to defeat the greatest army Tevinter ever mustered. Andrastians believe that the Maker smiled on the world that day.[5]

When Andraste met Shartan on the Valarian Fields, she gave him a sword that originally belonged to her mother Brona;[1] Shartan then renamed the blade "Glandivalis".[6]

According to the Canticle of Transfigurations 10:1, Andraste gave a sermon at Valarian Fields.[7] A part of that canticle is often sung in mourning ceremonies.[8]

Old building in the Valarian Fields
After fulfilling a mission in Hercinia, Marius is approached by Flavius, a slave in the service of Magister Illeneva. The Magister has learned of a group of blood mages sacrificing children to fuel uniquely powerful blood magic rituals in Tevinter and enlists Marius to destroy the group. Despite his misgivings about returning to Tevinter, Marius and Tessa travel to the site of the ritual, a set of ruins in the Valarian Fields just north of Minrathous. At their heart, Marius encounters Flavius himself, accompanied by a whole cohort of Tevinter soldiers, and led by Radonis, Archon of the Imperium, who has a task for the magekillers. Marius bluntly refuses Radonis' offer of work but is eventually compelled to relent by Tessa. Radonis reveals that the targets he wants assassinated are senior members of a cult known as the Venatori. Marius and Tessa leave the ruins and set out on their new mission.
