Herein lies the dragon's doom:
Empty are the streets and broken the gate,
The silence of all brought without a single fume.

Here was once a city that came to full bloom,
But I find now only roaring silence and quiet weight;
Herein lies the dragon's doom.

The dragon carved this great tomb
Unknowingly, when it built this city great,
The silence of all brought without a single fume.

Gold and silver and thread are now their tomb,
Cursed are they forever as ornate;
Herein lies the dragon's doom.

It was not his intention, I trustingly assume.
How else can riches bring it such enmity and hate?
The silence of all brought without a single fume.

These are ghosts I dare not exhume,
A loathing I will let lay, never to awake.
Herein lies the dragon's doom;
The silence of all brought without a single fume.

Prolonged exposure to red lyrium induces gradual psychological and physical change, though not as quickly as direct consumption will[1]. Depending on its quantity, an individual may endure several years of exposure to red lyrium without any perceivable effect, as was the case with Meredith Stannard, Knight-Commander of Kirkwall. It is possible that Meredith's immense willpower and Templar training also hindered the speed at which her red lyrium corrupted her, though likely she might have been unaware of it.

  1. During the future segment of In Hushed Whispers, if Inquisitor inquires Fiona if it's red lyrium growing out of her body, she will respond, "The longer you're near it... eventually... you become this," implying that one needn't consume red lyrium to physically transform.
