“It shapes the Stone. It is the Stone. It sculpts the world within and without.” ―Primeval dwarven carvings

The Titans are ancient beings that dwell deep beneath the earth. They are massive creatures who sing in the Stone, shaping it.[1]

Background

Little is known about the Titans. A dwarf Shaper named Valta found text predating the First Blight which described them, yet there is no mention of the Titans in Orzammar's Memories.[2]

Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The Inquisitor and Valta uncover more of the Titans' nature as they delve into the dark. Having gone beneath even the Deep Roads, they are ambushed by baffling assailants: the Sha-Brytol. They descend deeper into hostile territory and uncover consecutive wonders―a massive cavern of pure untapped lyrium, hundreds of feet high; a subterranean and even turbulent sea; and lastly, a gargantuan cavern with its own verdant ecosystem, with stalactites interconnected with bridges and dotted with structures; a full-blown civilization.

Throughout the journey, Valta finds lyrium etchings similar to Orzammar's memories, describing the Sha-Brytol and the Titans. Yet once they reach the verdant cavern, there is no titan in sight. The Inquisitor considers it, and is struck with an idea. The Deep Roads had felt different ever since they encountered the Sha-Brytol, almost organic; the reason they cannot see the Titan is because they are within it.

From the lyrium etchings, Valta discovers that the titans were ancient beings that sculpted the world, and surmises that the earthquakes may be their method of reshaping Thedas. The titans have been asleep for centuries and have guarded by the Sha-Brytol. She also discovers that lyrium is the blood of the titans, and that the Sha-Brytol drinks it to sustain themselves. The Titan that was causing the earthquakes in the Storm Coast was disturbed by The Breach.

Valta also learns from the etchings as well as her stone sense that the titans consider the dwarves their "children" and how the titans may be the Stone's "first" children. If either possibility is true, this would be devastating to dwarven culture and faith.

Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Following the Battle of Haven, a string of violent earthquakes grip the Storm Coast region. Ordinarily, it wouldn't have been brought to the Inquisitor's attention, but the quakes aren't subsiding and are threatening the Inquisition's vital lyrium trade with the dwarves of Orzammar, collapsing mining tunnels and causing casualties. The Inquisitor is asked to meet with a Shaper on the scene named Valta.

The Inquisition descend into the Deep Roads to find the cause of the worsening earthquakes with Valta and Renn. Along the way they battle the monstrous Darkspawn and the the dwarven Sha-Brytol guardians. Renn was a casualty of an ambush by the Sha-Brytol. During their adventure, they discover that the source of the earthquakes is a recently stirred titan. Valta uncovers information about the ancient titans from old lyrium etchings and piece together its relationship with lyrium and the Sha-Brytol. Eventually they reach a verdant cavern that is surmised to be the inside of the titan itself. At the heart of the cavern is a massive stone of raw lyrium which strikes Valta with lyrium energy and knocks her unconscious. Rocks and stone armor the raw lyrium and form a rock-lyrium guardian that the Inquisition defeats.

Following the guardian's defeat, Valta regains consciousness but is pained by a loud song until she releases a wave of telekinetic force. Valta reveals that the raw lyrium's energy blast established a connection between her and the titan. She reveals the titan was disturbed by The Breach but seems to have calmed now that it has established a connection with one of its "children". Valta has come to believe that everything that has transpired went according to the titan's plan. Though she admits that she is now different, she assures the Inquisitor that she is still the same shaperate she once was and wishes to stay in the verdant cavern to commune with the titan. She hopes in time, its song will reveal more knowledge about the dwarves and their mysterious history.

Trivia

  • Prior to The Descent, titans were mentioned by Kieran, should he have the soul of an Old God. In response to a humorous jest made by a dwarven Inquisitor about attempting to be taller, Kieran said, "But you can't be taller. Not without the titans."
  • Valta implies that the knowledge of the titans was erased from the Memories by the Shapers.
  • According to Shaper Valta, the darkspawn stay away from areas the Titans reside in for unknown reasons.
  • Titans emanate a song, while the Old Gods also emit the call of their own. The two songs are different.[3]
