“People need to learn that the Tirashan is a sleeping beast, and enough gnat-bites will rouse it.[1]

The Tirashan is a forest located on the western fringes of Orlais.

Background[]

The Tirashan forest is located at the edge of known Thedas, in the far west of the Orlesian Empire. The marquisate of Serault lies next to the Tirashan.

Tirashan is an ancient forest, its trees described to be "as old as the world".[2] It's also known as "a place of primordial appetites".[3]

The following information is mentioned only in Dragon Age: Origins: Prima Official Game Guide. Certain portions of this publication, particularly the Traveler's Guide featured in the Collector's Edition, might not reflect currently established lore.

The forest is said to be an unbroken expanse of trees, and presented as one of the wonders of the world, "as mysterious and dangerous as the hottest of deserts". When compared to the Arlathan Forest, it's said that Arlathan is neither as dark nor as dangerous as the Tirashan.[4]

Orlesian homesteads located at the edge of the Tirashan forest are attacked by elves, with many farmers being driven away from their homes as a result. If the Marquis of Serault increases the number of patrols and the attackers are successfully tracked down, their soldiers enter a skirmish with elves who wear brilliant crimson tattoos. These elves are hinted to be worshippers of the Forgotten Ones, as they do not call out to the typical elven gods during the battle.[1]

On another occasion, one of the peasants discovers a strange claw-like object while picking mushrooms on the edge of the Tirashan. It's described to be "black as sin, as long as your forearm, sharp as winter sunlight, and engraved with unidentifiable runes." If the object is displayed in the Marquis' hall, servants come to call it "the dragon's toe". The Kindly Knight suggests it could date to the Second Blight, possibly linking it to the archdemon Zazikel.[5]
