By the exit of Lothering, Sten, a Qunari warrior, is imprisoned for killing a family. The Warden can convince him to seek atonement by aiding them in the battle against the darkspawn. The Warden needs to ask the Revered Mother in the Lothering chantry to release him.
Walkthrough
Speak with Sten in his cage. He will be dismissive of most conversational options, but it can be clarified that he would rather die in battle than a cage. Regardless of how the conversation goes, most companions will vocally disapprove of his situation and support having him released.
The Warden may open the cage in a variety of ways:
- If the Warden has Mechanical Expertise (or Leliana is in the party), the cage's lock can be picked.
- The Revered Mother can be persuaded to release Sten into the Warden's custody. This is easier if a donation to the Chantry has been made. However, if Leliana is in the party, she alone (regardless of dialogue options, even those that lower her approval) will convince the Revered Mother to hand over the key.
- The Warden can intimidate the Revered Mother into providing the key. Even a failed attempt will amuse Morrigan (+5)(:+4) but offend Alistair (-13)(:-10) and Leliana : (-15).
- Stealing may be used to acquire the key.
Return to Sten's cage and release him. He then joins the party if you ask him.
Result
Sten will join the Warden as a companion.
Exploits
It's possible to gain maximum approval for Morrigan when trying to convince The Revered Mother to release Sten. When first talking to The Revered Mother choose the most threatening options until Morrigan comments how fun it is to threaten a priest. Simply choose to intimidate her, say you'll leave, then start the conversation again. This will add +4 approval each time. Repeat until approval is maxed. Make sure Alistair is not in your party or you will lower his approval. This method only works if you do not have the sufficient skill to intimidate her.
