The first thing you have to do is get Sten to like you a lot. He was at about 65 for me I believe. You can achieve this by buying him pictures of people and artsy things, he quite enjoys them. Once you do that ask him about why he was in the cage. He will tell you his story and how he went crazy because he lost his sword. Tell him you are going to help him find it, he says he lost it at the docks. Go there and talk to a scavenger right inside the enterence to the docks. Grill him about who was there before him. It will take you to a merchent outside of Orrzimar (he is the only Merchant you can buy from. he is a human.) He tells you that he sold it to a dwarf name Dwyn in Redcliffe village. He is located at the back of the docks. Talk to him with Sten presesnt and he will give you the key to his chest witch has the sword in It.
