Does critical shot, arrow of slaying, mighty blow and death hex cause shatters? 23:49, March 13, 2010 (UTC)

Unit Ranks[edit source]

It says that units of Lieutenant rank and above cannot be shattered as of 1.03. What is a Lt. rank, is it the Yellow named units? I seem to recall shattering an Ogre Alpha (or was it just an Ogre?) before 1.03, can I still do that?

That's how I understood this too. But right now I shattered a yellow Genlock Emissary. Though this seems to be extremely rare. --Ladguru (talk) 13:39, August 28, 2010 (UTC)

I'm sure I've also shattered yellow-named enemies. However just scoring a critical hit does not seem to guarantee shattering even white-named (normal rank, I assume). I see the notes made about not working with critical hits generated by certain abilities, but I've been paying attention to this for a while now. Yes, if all of my rogues and fighters immediately start attacking a frozen opponent, a shatter is pretty likely before the effect wears off, but I can do several backstab criticals with my rogue that won't work, and he isn't using the mentioned abilities. I'm at level 1.04. (talk) 02:56, September 19, 2011 (UTC)Phthartic

That's because backstabs don't count as criticals, unfortunately. So if you aren't using Coup de Grace, you might want to attack frontally or from an angle not leading to a backstab. My rogue is CdG, which overall is good I think, except in this case. So if possible, I try to use Riposte, since the final hit technically counts as a critical and thus shatters the opponent. But since that is on cooldown a lot, I have to rely mostly on my party to do the shattering. At the moment that's Leliana and Sten. The former provides Song of Courage, while the latter's 2H abilities tend to crit a lot anyhow and even more so with SoC.RadiationStorm (talk) 15:52, November 15, 2011 (UTC)

Corrected the misleading wording regarding the rank of shatterable enemies[edit source]

The misunderstanding actually originates with the official Bioware patch 1.03 notes, where the wording is as follows: "Elite-rank enemies (lieutenants) can no longer be shattered". Anyhow, there are 5 creature ranks is DAO: critter, normal, lieutenant, boss, elite boss. The former three can be shattered as of 1.05, the latter two cannot. IN (talk) 17:47, January 16, 2018 (UTC)
