Tal vashoth

An Honorable Tal-Vashoth, later Maraas

The Tal-Vashoth are former Qunari who abandoned the Qun and became violent. Just as Qunari denotes those that follow the Qun, elves and humans included, Vashoth denotes those who no longer wish to adhere to its rules; it is not specific to race. Literally, Vashoth means "Grey" and Tal-Vashoth means "True Grey" in Qunlat.

Becoming a Tal-Vashoth

It is not entirely clear what motivates Qunari to reject the Qun, but one of the most likely reasons is the assignment of a low and unpleasant place in Qunari society. Qunari who have ambition above their station, such as Armaas[citation needed] , come to resent their place in the society, and thus the Qun. Others, such as Maraas, seem to simply tire of a life driven by duty and purpose.

When a Qunari abandons the Qun he or she becomes Vashoth. Eventually, they have to leave Qunari society lest they should get discovered and re-educated by the Ben-Hassrath. Violent ones become Tal'Vashoth. Which is mostly the ones who were former soldiers, because they have no other useful skills. Many of them never fight the Qunari but rather become mercenaries in other lands, such as Kadan-Fe in Ferelden. When they actively strike at the Qunari, they usually murder the most defenseless civilians they can find, because they lack numbers and organization that would make them a match for the antaam. They don't really have goals and they're not a resistance.[1]

Culture

The Tal-Vashoth aren't a group[1], and there is no organized Tal-Vashoth culture. Just how much an average Tal-Vashoth has abandoned their upbringing in their heart depends on the individual.[2] A Tal-Vashoth chooses their name arbitrary: could be a word they like the sound of, could be something they think is descriptive. Some of them don't choose anything at all.[1] Many of the Tal-Vashoth cut their horns off because they think it makes them look tougher and scarier.[3] Mages are tolerated by other Tal-Vashoth, but they're not really popular since they lack proper training and therefore might be dangerous to those around them.[1]
