In Dragon Age: Inquisition, runes can be applied to weapons that possess a rune slot to improve the effectiveness of the weapon. Runes are applied at the Modify Weapon table in Haven or Skyhold's Undercroft. Runes cannot be applied to armor. Once applied, a rune cannot be removed, only replaced.
Runes can be found or crafted by the Inquisitor once the schematic has been found. Runes can also be found in the world, purchased from a merchant or rewarded for completing quests or War table operations.
Elemental runes schematics are found in the order of increasing quality. The first rune schematic is always the basic rune. For example, a Fire Rune. The second rune schematic found will be the Master Fire Rune and the third schematic will be the Superb Fire Rune. Therefore, it is necessary to find all three schematics to obtain the Superb Fire Rune schematic.
On the other hand, non-elemental runes can be found in any order. For example, the Superb Cleansing Rune schematic can always be found at the Suledin's Keep merchant regardless of whether the Cleansing Rune or the Master Cleansing Rune has been found.
