In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Rooks of any gender and race can pursue a romance with all seven companions. Game Director Corinne Busche specified that all seven companions are specifically pansexual and rejected the label of "playersexual," explaining that companions might mention past partners or start relationships with other companions if not romanced by Rook.[1]

Romance mechanics[]

This section is incomplete and requires expansion.

To begin a romance, Rook must flirt with a companion enough to eventually trigger a scene where they can formally express romantic interest in them. This changes their dynamic from friendly to flirting, with some changes in dialogue and changes in the companion menu; a new romance-specific label and a heart icon instead of the standard friendship ones displayed under their bond level. Expressing romantic interest in someone does not exclude Rook from pursuing other companions, nor does it cause jealousy between team members. If Rook chooses to remain friends then they are locked out of romancing that companion for the rest of the game.

After some point in the story Rook has the option to fully commit to a romance at the exclusion of the others, often in a scene where the two share a first kiss. When this happens all other romances are automatically returned to their friendship status with no further comments. Should Rook chose to remain friends that will again lock out any potential romance with that companion going forward.

Once Rook has committed to a relationship other companions may move forward with their own romances.

Trivia[]

  • As of December 4, 2024, Neve was the most romanced companion while Emmrich was the least.[2]
  • Unlike past Dragon Age games, the player character is unable to flirt or sleep with anyone outside of the core characters and their romance options are restricted to the seven companions.
  • While past Dragon Age companion romances were restricted based on the gender or race of the player character, all seven companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard can be romanced regardless of sex and/or race.
  • Emmrich is the oldest romanceable companion in the Dragon Age series.
  • Despite all seven companions being pansexual and romanceable regardless of gender, Taash's mother notes that it is uncommon for Taash to be interested in men.
    • However this does not stop a male player character from romancing them and the romance remains largely the same save for a few unique dialogue options.
  • Taash is the first romanceable non-binary companion in the Dragon Age series.
  • Harding is the first romanceable dwarven companion in the series.
