Regrets of the Dread Wolf is a side quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Acquisition[]

Templatetools This section is incomplete and requires expansion.

This quest can be acquired by finding a wolf statuette in the Crossroads, or by receiving a wolf statuette from the Inquisitor during Shades of the Blight.

Walkthrough[]

Magical artifacts offer the team a chance to learn more about the history of the ancient elves... and their secrets.

Collect six wolf statuettes[]

This quest requires obtaining six wolf statuettes in total, including five from the Crossroads and one from the Inquisitor. The statuettes can be obtained in any order, but can be used in the Lighthouse only after the one from the Inquisitor has been received.

The five statuettes from the Crossroads are:

The Labs Below[]

Find the wolf statuette on top of a pedestal at the end of the quest.

The Wolf's Call[]

Find the wolf statuette on top of a pedestal at the end of the quest.

Disrupt and Conquer[]

Find the wolf statuette on top of a pedestal at the end of the quest.

Gate of Lost Ages[]

After finishing the quest for this gate, head into the newly unlocked area in the Converged City. Take out the group of Venatori and destroy all of the crystals in the area. A platform with crystals accessed by Lucanis's ability also holds a chest that can be looted. Destroying all of the crystals will lower the gate blocking the wolf statuette up on the cliff, but also activates the Smoldering Blood Forge as a mini boss that must be taken down, which is vulnerable to cold damage.

Continue South up the stairs leading to the next area and up a small ladder that can be shot down with a ranged attack. This area will also have a group of Venatori that need to be taken out to bring down the barrier blocking the area with the statuette. Take out all of the barrier crystals in the area, grab the memento that was by one of the crystals, and then finally take out the barrier blocking a ladder leading up the cliff-face. Defeat a Flame-Cloaked Magister and an Elite Venatori War-Mage that appear, both of which are also vulnerable to cold damage, and then collect the wolf statuette and the contents of the chest next to it.

Gate of Faded Glories[]

After opening the Gate of Faded Glories, proceed to the left island to find a decoy statuette set up by the Antaam. Picking up the decoy triggers an ambush. After defeating the ambushers, align two pairs of rotatable statues in the area. Each of the two rotatable statues on the current island has a corresponding one that it must face on the island to the east. Completing the statues puzzle creates the floating bridges needed to reach the final island with the true wolf statuette.

Inquisitor's statuette[]

A wolf statuette is given to Rook by the Inquisitor during the conversation with Morrigan in The Cobbled Swan during the quest Shades of the Blight. If you've already obtained the five statuettes from the Crossroads before starting Shades of the Blight, the quest journal for Regrets of the Dread Wolf will display the objective "Continue adventuring until an expert arrives."

Investigate the wolf statuette[]

After receiving a wolf statuette during Shades of the Blight, head to the Lighthouse to find a use for it. Place the statuette on the pedestal opposite the Change Decor table in the Library. A cutscene will play a memory belonging to Solas and the team discussing it's implications. Afterwards, other statuettes that have been obtained can be used in a similar manner.

First Regret[]

Regret 1

The mural depicts Solas angrily confronting Elgar'nan and Mythal as they ascend to the pretense of godhood as the Evanuris, enraged that they had just fought a war only to assume power. Elgar'nan mockingly refers to Solas as "Mythal's lapdog".

During the discussion, the team concludes that Mythal sharing the rule with Elgar'nan's, while possibly a well-intentioned attempt to soften his worst instincts, was a personal betrayal to Solas and went against everything he thought they had fought for.

Second Regret[]

The Dread Wolf's second regret

Solas and Mythal are having a clandestine meeting, where Solas tells Mythal that the other Evanuris are tyring to break out the blight to use as a weapon but she does not believe him. He then asks her to leave the other gods and remain with him but she simply states that she will investigate his claims about the blight. He concedes this, saying that they must stop it, as the blight is "their mistake".

The group is immediately hung up on Mythal addressing Solas as "love", which they debate could be romantic or simply part of the customs of their time. They are unsure what he regrets in this memory until Harding points out that Mythal was supposedly murdered by the other Evanuris. They surmise she must have been killed after trying to confront them regarding the blight, and Solas' regrets sending her to do so.

Third Regret[]

The Dread Wolf's third regret

Solas' is executing the ritual that accidentally created the veil. It is clear his intention is to lock away the Evanuris, and that their life force would sustain their prison, but then screams out in pain.

Something had clearly gone wrong during the rites, resulting in the Fade being locked away together with the gods, inside some sort of elven palace. Putting two and two together, Harding points out that this would explain a part of the Chant of Light that describe how the blight came to be but also disproving it. According to the Chantry the blight was the world's punishment when Tevinter magisters forced their way into The Golden City, a palace in the Fade created by the Maker, but the maker had no apparent involvement in this at all.

Fourth Regret[]

The Dread Wolf's fourth regret

The memory reveals that the first elves were once spirits who took deliberately manifested physical form and Mythal is encouraging Solas join her in this. Solas despondently argues against it, having no desire to leave the fade. In addition, he worries about the ramifications of them using Lyrium to build their bodies as the ground shakes when they use it, alluding to the titans. Still, Mythal says he needs his wisdom to counter Elgar'nan's influence and a dejected Solas concedes that he will always follow where she goes.

The table grapple with the revelations about the origin of the elves and what to do with that knowledge. The fact that the ground shook leads them to conclude that the war the very first elves fought must have been against the titans and it was a direct result of them creating their physical forms against Solas' advice.

Fifth Regret[]

The Dread Wolf's fifth regret

A subdued Solas presents Mythal with the lyrium dagger, and makes it clear that it can be used to effectively nullify the titans opposition by cleaving their spirits from their bodies. He sternly warns her that those severed dreams will fester and become a blight upon the world, but he still hands it over as Mythal claims it to be the only way to end the war.

Harding is understandably upset and Davrin connects the titan's madness to the blight from Solas' words and the fact that both lyrium and the blight have a sort of song only certain people hear. Even Davrin expresses compassion for the blight, or at least what it was once was.

Sixth Regret[]

The Dread Wolf's sixth regret

The final and deepest regret shows Solas in present day draining the life essence from Mythal to absorb her godly power. He takes no pleasure in this, claiming he needs to make a stronger prison for the blight, but as she is dying she makes it clear she knows that he wants to tear down the veil. Mythal, who has lived in this world as she slowly regained her strength over millennia, doesn't want him to, but for the first time Solas tearfully disregards her opinion; presumably remembering all the times he regretted not standing up to her in the past.

The Veilguard has finally learned how Solas got his powers back so quickly after he was a seemingly normal mage during the inquisition. They also go through what they have learned about him - that he desperately wants to stop the blight, that he was ultimately willing to turn on Mythal, that he is a spirit, that he is tied to the Veil as it's creator, that he's deeply emotional in regards to the Evanuris and that he is telling himself he's doing the right thing.

Meet Morrigan in the Crossroads[]

After all six statuettes have been placed inside the Lighthouse, the Caretaker informs them that Morrigan wishes to speak with speak to Morrigan in the Crossroads. Morrigan will reveal more about the history of Solas and Mythal, and will open the way to a section of the Crossroads where a fragment of Mythal can be found.

By combat[]

Templatetools This section is incomplete and requires expansion.

Selecting the dialogue option You're not going to help us, or failing to convince her, results in her turning into a level 45 dragon.

By dialogue[]

To convince Mythal you must succeed in convincing her by selecting the correct dialogue option. Some options are only available to Rook under specific circumstances, and there may be more than the ones listed here.

To begin to persuade Mythal, select the option "I want your help." to unlock four different paths of conversation. In order to convince Mythal, you must pick the correct option in three of the conversation paths unless you have access to one of the special dialogue options. If you have access to a special dialogue option, selecting that option will alone be sufficient to persuade Mythal.

  • Subject: We must stop the blight.
    • Correct answer: You stood against it.
Special dialogue option if Rook is dwarven and has completed The Heart of the Titan:
  • Correct answer: I’ve felt the Titan’s pain.
───────
  • Subject: We must stop the gods.
    • Correct answer: They wronged you.
Special dialogue option if Rook has completed Through the Shadows:
  • Correct answer: We stopped Anaris.
───────
  • Subject: We are worthy.
    • Correct answer: Building a safe place.
───────
  • Subject: Solas is helping.
    • Correct answer: Respected him.

Select the correct options three times or use any of the special dialogue options and Mythal will deem Rook worthy, freely giving up her essence to the Veilguard.

Results[]

The team has found a wolf statuette in the Crossroads. Any significance it holds may be unlocked when the team finds someone with a deeper knowledge of it.

The Inquisitor has given the team a gift: a wolf statuette, magically tied to Solas, that she found around the time that Solas's ritual failed. Morrigan has suggested taking it to the Lighthouse and seeing what insights it might offer into the Dread Wolf.

The wolf statuette has revealed one of Solas's ancient memories, giving a clue to the Dread Wolf's past. Finding more of these statuettes may unlock more memories, offering the team a chance to get inside Solas's head and figure out his true motives and intentions.

While many of the Dread Wolf's secrets have been laid bare, from the origin of elves as spirits to Solas's final betrayal of Mythal, questions remain. If the team wants to learn more about Solas's motives and prepare for what he might do, they must seek out Morrigan.

Morrigan has revealed that she carries a fragment of Mythal, giving her the memories of an elven god, if not the power. Another fragment of Mythal has waited in the Crossroads ever since the elven gods struck her down, and Morrigan insists the team might need it in days to come.

If Mythal's essence was obtained willingly:

A fragment of Mythal found the team worthy of her power and willingly surrendered her essence. That power now rests safely with the team, ready for when they find a way to use it to stop Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain... or any other god who might strike.
