Rainier's Release: An Alternative is a war table operation in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Acquisition[]
Available during Blackwall's companion quest Revelations, once the Inquisitor has spoken to Cullen in Val Royeaux about Thom Rainier's fate. Requires the Underworld Knowledge Inquisition perk.
Operation text[]
Leliana informs me that your contacts in the underworld could aid in having Rainier released from prison. This route would conveniently mask the Inquisition's involvement.

Advisor suggestions[]
Note: The time listed is the time it takes with no agents.
Josephine - N/A[]
Not participating in this mission.
Leliana - 0:04:00[]
An offer whispered in the right circles. A dozen factions vying for our favor. We'll see who desires it most.
Cullen - N/A[]
Not participating in this mission.
Results[]
Rainier was brought to Skyhold gates under cover of darkness. Best not to ask how.
Leliana
Rewards[]
- Progresses Blackwall's companion quest Revelations
- Unlocks the judgment of Captain Thom Rainier
Notes[]
- This operation is mutually exclusive with Thom Rainier's Fate and simply provides a fourth option with regards to his release.
- The way in which Thom Rainier is released from prison—through Rainier's Release: An Alternative or Thom Rainier's Fate—will affect the dialogue during the judgment.
- Rainier will not appreciate the Inquisitor using their connections to free him, stating that they are a criminal like him and that the Inquisition is corrupt in doing so. If the Inquisitor replies that they had no choice, Rainier states that they should have left him in prison. This response will not result in any companion, including Rainier, gaining or losing approval.
Bugs[]
- Choosing this method causes the pyramid for Thom Rainier's Fate to vanish, but the star for an unstarted mission remains. This bug is not unique to this quest/mission but a possible solution is to go through all of the advisors without selecting any thus treating the mission as viewed and removing the "New Mission" mark (little star).
