The Valdasine Thaig is an ancient thaig and the home of House Valdasine. In present day it is known as the Primeval Thaig or colloquially as Bartrand's Folly.[1]

Background[]

In ancient times, prior to the darkspawn, House Valdasine was single-handedly able to supply the dwarven empire with lyrium. Tale has it that the thaig's doors were shut unannounced not allowing for anyone to exit or enter—not even to visiting Paragons. After days of silence the doors were finally breached, however no one remained, nor was there any evidence of what had transpired. Those that entered uncovered a red lyrium idol, that was purportedly worshiped, and a strange metal staff gleaming as if it were pure lyrium. When the dwarven king received word he ordered the idol and the staff to remain untouched inside and to have the thaig sealed. Such was the danger the thaig posed, that the existence of the thaig was stricken from the very Memories so that it would be completely forgotten in time.

The thaig's architecture is completely distinct from others and appears to be untainted by the darkspawn's corruption. There are vast statues and temples—several of which seemed to have been created entirely by magic. As this is extremely out of character for the dwarves of old, the thaig is completely shrouded in mystery—questions pertaining to why these dwarves worship gods and how they were able to sculpt using magic—may never be fully answered.

When Hawke and the expedition descend into the Deep Roads using ancient Grey Warden maps, they descend so far that they enter the Primeval Thaig, located below the official level of the Roads. The thaig is overgrown by red lyrium, and a lyrium idol is found in it. The thaig however is not uninhabited: rock wraiths now roam the halls, as well as demons.

If Hawke meets Nathaniel Howe in Act 3, he tells that the Grey Wardens took great interest in the thaig and the First Warden commissioned a special expedition to learn more.
