The rune can only be obtained from Sandal during the quest Haunted.

Trivia
- The cutscene where Sandal creates the rune mimics scenes from the movie Pulp Fiction where various characters open the briefcase and behold its contents, which are never shown to the audience. A golden glow emanates from the briefcase and all the characters react as if it is the most beautiful thing they've seen. When Sandal crafts the rune, Hawke, Bodahn, and Sandal all appear behind the crafting table. There is a partially unrolled scroll which obscures the player's view as to what the primeval rune looks like, but Hawke and the dwarves have rather reverent looks upon their faces as a golden glow radiates from where the rune is assumed to be.
