Perendale is a city in western Nevarra. It was taken from Orlais during the Blessed Age.
Background[]
Perendale is located in a mountainous region, on the southern edge of the Hunterhorn Mountains. The area surrounding the city is rich in silver mines, wyverns, and mountain goats. In the past, the mountains near the city were also full of dragons.
As it used to be an Orlesian city until the Blessed Age, Perendale still looks like a provincial Orlesian town. A carving of the Lions Slaying the Dragon adorns the city's gate, and many lions can be found decorating the city's buildings.[1]
History[]
In 7:82 Storm, Emperor Etienne Valmont I set his childless wife of seventeen years to marry Princess Sotiria Pentaghast, theoretically ushering peace and cooperation between the historically feuding nations of Orlais and Nevarra. However, in 7:97 Storm, as the Emperor remained without child, he sent Empress Sotiria to a cloister and married his mistress. The Pentaghasts were gravely insulted, but took no immediate action beyond sending a war party to retrieve their princess and chose to bide their time instead.
In 8:46 Blessed, when the bulk of the Orlesian forces was committed to a war in Ferelden, the Pentaghasts chose to retaliate, starting a war of their own against Orlais. The Nevarrans captured the cities of Arlesans, Ghislain, and Perendale. While the Orlesians eventually recaptured the former two, Perendale was permanently ceded to Nevarra.
In 8:70, another war broke out between Nevarra and Orlais over control of the western hills around Perendale. This conflict also resulted in Nevarran victory. However, Orlais had sown dissent and rebellion among the locals, so that many of Perendale's inhabitants still resent Nevarran rule and hope to return to the Empire.[1][2] Victory in Perendale inspired the king of Nevarra to attempt to conquer the Free Marches. Nevarran expansion was eventually stopped by Cade Arvale, the Champion of Tantervale.[3]
