For the character from Dragon Age: Origins, see Ser Otto.

“Yes, after we make you Tranquil, you'll do everything I say...”

Ser Otto Alrik is a prejudiced and over zealous templar in Kirkwall, and the architect of the Tranquil Solution.

Background

Ser Alrik is a templar who harbours deep prejudice and resentments towards mages. He is also the mind behind the nefarious Tranquil Solution.

The Tranquil Solution

The Tranquil Solution was a scheme orchestrated by Ser Alrik, in which he intended to make every mage in Thedas under Circle control Tranquil. This would range from the most accomplished enchanter, to the smallest child who exhibited magical ability. Proposals for the plan to begin immediately were sent to Meredith, Knight Commander of the templars in Kirkwall, and to the leader of the Chantry herself, Divine Justinia V. Though both leaders had rejected the plan, Alrik went through with his plan in secret, snatching away mages and forcing them into tranquility.

The Tranquil Solution is a reference to the Final Solution from Nazi-era Germany.

Dragon Age II.

Ser Alrik is involved in Anders' companion quest Dissent, when the apostate asks Hawke to intercept Alrik in a secret basement below Darktown, in an attempt to gain evidence of The Tranquil Solution and expose it to Grand Cleric Elthina, so she could no longer remain neutral in the conflict between the mages and templars of Kirkwall. When Alrik is found, he is confronting a mage named Ella, whom he intends to put through the Rite of Tranquility, despite her having passed her Harrowing. As he threatens her, he reveals his motives may be even more perverse then Anders originally believed, with a heavy implication Alrik has taken advantage of the Tranquil suggestibility to rape them, this is confirmed by a banter between a human tranquil and her former elven lover in the gallows earlier. You are forced to fight and kill him, and can either tell Ella to flee Kirkwall or return to the Circle, unless she is killed by Vengence.

  • Optional: Afterwards if you visit the Chantry and speak to Grand Cleric Elthina there will be a short cutscene. This may or may not effect Sebastian Vael's approval/rivalry rating.
