Acquisition

You can acquire this quest from a letter in your home. It is preceded by "A Wayward Son".

Walkthrough

This section contains spoilers for:
Dragon Age II.

For this quest, you and your party must enter the fade. If you choose to take Merrill with you, she will succumb to the demon of Pride no matter what options you choose. You will be forced to fight her. However, when she dies in the Fade, she does not die in real life. You can complete the quest, and when you exit the Fade, she will be alive and well and still in your party.

Another note: If you are pursuing a friendship or relationship with Merrill, a few actions in the Fade will result in rivalry points with her: 1) When you initiate the Night Terrors quest by talking to Feynriel's mother, the Keeper will request you kill Feynriel inside of the fade to make him Tranquil. Refusing nets you 5 Friendship points, while keeping the option open will result in 10 Rivalry. Note this seems to not take place if Merrill was not present when the quest was initiated, but chosen when entering the Fade. 2) When you encounter the Sloth demon, if you choose to kill him immediately she will disapprove 3) When she is tempted by the Pride demon, if you choose the peaceful "Don't do it, Merrill" she will disapprove by 20 points. You can avoid the last one by choosing the sarcastic "Convincing argument" option, and you will incur no rivalry points.

Other party interactions happen as well.

Fenris will approve of some actions taken in the fade. You can net 5 Friendship points by killing the Sloth demon Torpor immediately. He will be lured from your side temporarily by the Pride demon.

Isabela will also be lured from your side temporarily by the Desire demon if she is brought with you.

Puzzles

  1. The flying book in the first room can be read. As it will always stop at roughly the same places simply wait for it and pause to click on it. You will get one attribute point.
  2. East of the first room are 7 barrels that can be moved by clicking on them. If you can get all four large barrels on the floor and the three smaller ones above them within the move-limit you get another attrivute point.
  3. The second barrel puzzle is in the next room to the east. This time you have to get all four red barrels into the middle of the 12 barrels to get another 2 attribute points.

Result

There are 2 possible outcomes for this quest.

  1. Feynriel is made Tranquil. His mother is devastated. Choose this by selecting the upper right option twice. This will lead the main character to execute Feynriel in the Fade.
  2. Feynriel learns to control his ability with the encouragement of Hawke. To choose this, choose the lower right option.
  3. You can also choose to aid the sloth demon in possessing him and he will reward you with one of three options: 6 attribute points, 1 spell/talent, or 2 unique runes...

If you do not side with the demon, you will be given a loot item, Tome of the Slumbering Elders, by the Keeper.

Two of your three companions will always turn on you. Any companions who turned on you in the Fade now have entries for follow-up quests. These are simple conversations where the offending member apologizes, affecting your friendship bar.

Rewards

  1. 4 attribute points:
    1. 1 for reading the Book in the first room
    2. 1 for solving the first barrel puzzle
    3. 2 for solving the second barrel puzzle
  2. If Hawke sides with the demon:
    1. 6 attribute points if Hawke chooses "Power"
    2. 1 talent/spell if Hawke chooses "Knowledge"

  3. If Hawke does not side with the demon:
