Neromenian is a city in the Tevinter Imperium located on the eastern coast of the Nocen Sea. It is named after the Neromenian people, the first human tribe to settle in Thedas. The stretch of coast along Neromenian is shrouded in darkness due to near permanent cloud cover, and prone to violent storms.[1]

History[]

In -1700 Ancient, nearly 1500 years after they first settled along the coast of the Nocen Sea, the Neromenian tribes split to form four separate kingdoms: Neromenian, Qarinus, Tevinter, and Barindur. The kingdom of Neromenian was said to cover the region from the modern city of Neromenian to the Hundred Pillars to the south and east.[2]

According to the Chant of Light's Canticle of Threnodies, Neromenian was once ruled by King Antoridus. When he waged war against the neighboring Inghirsh, a group of people believed to have lived across the Silent Plains before the First Blight, he turned to his oracles for victory. While most sought counsel from the Maker, who told them that they wouldn't prevail against the Inghirsh, Thalsian sought counsel from a demon of the Fade, which promised Antoridus victory in exchange for forsaking the Maker and sacrifices of oxen and horses. Antoridus complied and was granted victory, claiming the lands of the Inghirsh and taking their people at chattel. Antoridus then turned his gaze to the lands of the Planasene to the south, but while his campaign was initially successful, King Damertes of the Planasene eventually turned to worship of demons as well to counter Antoridus' attacks. Afflicted with boils and racked with pains, the armies of Antoridus returned to Neromenian.[3]

Thalsian eventually used his knowledge of blood magic, which he claimed to have learned from personally communicating with the Old God Dumat in -1595 Ancient, to declare himself king of Neromenian.[4]

In -1207 Ancient,[5] when the high king of Neromenian died without an heir, a successor had to be chosen from among the priesthood of Dumat, Toth, and Lusacan, the patron gods of Neromenian. Their high priests were summoned to the palace and told to solve a riddle to prove which of them was most favored by the gods. Whoever could tie an egg in a knot and place it on the enchanted pedestal that would unlock the vaults in which the crown was kept would become high king of Neromenian. If none of them found the answer before sunrise, they would all be executed. While the high priests of Toth and Luscan entered the Fade to find the answer, the high priest of Dumat, Darinius, tore a strip of cloth, soaked it in a smashed egg then tied it in a knot. When he placed it on the pedestal, the royal vault unlocked and Darinius became high king of Neromenian.

On the night of Darinius' coronation, his foster mother told him that he was in fact the son of the high queen of Tevinter, who had been deposed and killed by her brother on the day of Darinius' birth. While he was obliged to avenge his mother or face the gods' curse, Darinius could not risk open conflict with his uncle, King Tarsian of Tevinter. Instead, after a dream in which he saw himself as a ferryman, which he took as a message from Dumat, he asked his uncle for parley. He took seven soldiers as his honor guard to Minrathous, then ensorcelled the palace to prevent anyone else from entering and challenged his uncle to a duel. When the spell on the palace was lifted, Darinius had killed Tarsian and reclaimed the throne of Tevinter, thus uniting the kingdoms of Neromenian and Tevinter. Darinius eventually formed the Tevinter Imperium in -1195 Ancient.[6][7] Neromenian became just one of many cities in the Imperium.
