Montsimmard is a major city in Orlais. It is located west of the Dales, east of Lake Celestine and south of the Heartlands. The Imperial Highway runs through Montsimmard.
History[]
In 1:25 Divine, during the Second Blight, Montsimmard was almost entirely destroyed by the darkspawn. The inaction of the elven army in the neighboring Dales fueled resentment and anger towards the elves.[1][2]
Border tensions between Orlais and the Dales broke out into open conflict in 2:09 Glory. The following year, the Emerald Knight Vaharel led the elven army into capturing Montsimmard.[3] As the victorious army marched towards Val Royeaux, Divine Renata I called for an Exalted March against the Dales. Montsimmard was eventually recaptured. After a decade of conflict, the Exalted March resulted in a victory for Orlais.[4]
Montsimmard was once again attacked by darkspawn in 3:10 Towers, during the Third Blight. Catapults were built to fling flaming debris at the darkspawn, though eventually it was the Grey Wardens that drove the darkspawn away, not siege equipment.[5]
In the first half of the Storm Age, a woman named Aveline participated in a tournament that took place in Montsimmard at a time when women were forbidden from doing so. Her victory and subsequent murder at the tournament were witnessed by Prince Freyan, inspiring him to abolish the law preventing women from joining the knighthood and posthumously making Aveline the first female chevalier once he became emperor.[6]
