“From sea to shore, we tame the waves” ―Montilyet Family motto

The Montilyet family is an Antivan noble family, with strong ties to Orlais.

Background[]

Up until the beginning of the Blessed Age, the Montilyets were one of the major naval powers in Antiva. Their trading vessels numbered in the hundreds, and were escorted by a large contingent of formidable warships–ostensibly at the disposal of the Antivan royal navy. Their heavily guarded cargo was often targeted by Rivaini pirates wishing to make their name and their fortune. As a result, the Montilyets became entangled in many rivalries and vendettas against pirates, some of which have lasted to this day.

The Montilyets always kept strong ties with Orlais. Roughly half the family lived in Val Royeaux, and they frequently intermarried with Orlesian nobility. However, after a love affair between a member of House Montilyet and of Orlesian House Du Paraquette ended in extreme violence, the Montilyets were exiled from Orlais, their trading contracts in the empire rendered invalid. A year later, a massive storm destroyed a large convoy of trading ships sent to the Tevinter Imperium, crippling them further. As superstitious sailors would no longer sail their ships and funds for repair could not be conjured up in time to repay their debts, the Montilyets lost what little remained of their once legendary fleet.

The Montilyets became a modest trading house, known mostly for their wine and their great family estate in Antiva City. Their standing started to rise again when Josephine Montilyet became the family's heir apparent.[1]

Dragon Age: Inquisition.

When Josephine attempts to restore the Montilyets' trading contracts in Orlais, she becomes the target of the House of Repose, a guild of assassins who had been contracted by the Du Paraquettes over a century ago to ensure that the Montilyets would never be reinstated in Orlais. The Inquisitor can choose to help Josephine resolve this problem by either destroying the original contract kept in the vaults of the House of Repose or by helping Josephine restore the remaining Du Paraquettes to nobility so they can cancel the contract. Either option leads to an improvement in the Montilyets' fortunes.
