Malcolm's Will is an optional side quest in the Legacy DLC for Dragon Age II.

Acquisition

The quest is acquired when Hawke is in Corypheus's Prison - Sashamiri's Floor. In Sashamiri's Floor, you will encounter the first of several magical prisons (located throughout the prison) holding demons. The prison barrier is destroyed in two steps:

  • First, by activating the two trigger points called "Mark of the Binder" - which look like glowing red dots. These are on the walls near the magical prison.
  • Second, by activating the third Mark of the Binder on the magical barrier itself.

This releases the shade inside the barrier. Once the shade and its replicas have been defeated, the quest triggers and appears in your journal.

Walkthrough

There are three magical prisons located within the prison, one on Sashamiri's Floor, and two on Farele's Floor.

  • The first prison is described under "Acquisition" above.
  • The second prison is located soon after entering Farele's Floor, on the east side of the prison. You encounter a Mark of the Binder, along with the magical prison itself. The second Mark of the Binder is beyond in the next room. This prison contains an Abomination, who summons four profanes to attack you in the battle. Defeating the abomination and the profane updates the Malcolm's Will quest.
  • The third and final prison is located about halfway through Farele's Floor, on the north side of the prison. You encounter two interlinked rooms of prison cells. The first of these two rooms contains one Mark of the Binder, and the magical prison. The second Mark of the Binder is in the next room to the west. The prison holds a desire demon who summons corpses and skeleton archers to her defence. Defeating the desire demon and the other enemies completes the Malcolm's Will quest.

Rewards

  • If Bethany Hawke is in the party during the quest, she will receive an exclusive staff, Bloodline.
  • If both siblings are dead, or the living one is not present in the party, Hawke will receive a belt.
  • If Carver Hawke is in the party during the quest, he was ment to receive an exclusive mace, Lineage. Unfortunately (like quite a few items in Legacy) it is bugged and will not appear.

Result

Once the third prison has been defeated, the voice of Malcolm Hawke explains the background to his role in imprisoning these demons. He explains that he imprisoned the demons as part of a deal to allow him and Leandra Amell to return home with their baby. Malcolm expresses the hope that the baby will not take after him, i.e., that the infant Hawke will not be a mage.

If Carver Hawke was present in the party after defeating the third demon a conversation between you and him will start, giving you the possibility to gain friendship or rivalry points:

  • "You know that's not true" and "Stop doubting" results in Friendship Carver: friendship (+15).
  • "You know that's not true" and "More like abnormal" results in Friendship Carver: friendship (+15).
  • "You know that's not true" and "Shut up" changes nothing.
  • "No we weren't. Grow up." and "Stop doubting" results in Friendship Carver: friendship (+10).
  • "No we weren't. Grow up." and "More like abnormal" results in Friendship Carver: friendship (+10).
  • "No we weren't. Grow up." and "Shut up" results in Rivalry Carver: rivalry (+5).
  • "We should have been" and "It's confidence, not neglect" results in Friendship (+10)
  • "We should have been" and "You were free" results in Friendship (+10)
  • "We should have been" and "Shut up" results in Rivalry (+5).
