Mac Tir family

The Mac Tir family is a noble family of Ferelden, established at the end of the Fereldan Rebellion.

Background[]

In 8:96 Blessed, the rebel leader of Ferelden, the rightful queen Moira was betrayed and assassinated. Her son Maric, contemporary heir to the throne, fled for his life and stumbled on the rebel camp led by Gareth of Oswin. His son Loghain allowed the prince to stay there, ignorant of his true identity. Ceorlic, an Orlesian sympathizer who had betrayed Moira, discovered the camp and killed most of the rebels, including Gareth. Loghain escaped, however, along with Maric.

On the run, Loghain and Maric fled into the Korcari Wilds where they were captured by the Dalish and given to the Witch of the Wilds. Once she released them, they reunited with the rebels. The rebels were joined by an Orlesian spy Katriel who led the group through the Deep Roads to Gwaren where they met the remaining rebels.

Young Loghain embarked on a romance with Rowan. He accompanied Maric as the prince confronted Bann Ceorlic and the other traitors responsible for Queen Moira's murder and executed them for their betrayal. Loghain and Rowan commanded the final assault against the Orlesians at River Dane in 8:99 Blessed. The armor of the chevalier who led the Orlesians was looted by Loghain, and the sight of him wearing it later became synonymous with Fereldan's defiance of Orlais. Loghain was hailed as the Hero of River Dane for his great victory.

Despite the victory at River Dane, the rebellion continued for three more years until the rebels besieged Denerim and killed King Meghren, ending the occupation. Loghain was rewarded by being made Teyrn of Gwaren, making him second in rank to the king. Realising that Maric needed a queen, he gave up Rowan, who married King Maric.

Loghain, who held no surname at the time, was then given the name of Mac Tir by the new King.^[1]

He married a beautiful woman, with whom he had one daughter, Anora. The Teyrn remained a close advisor and friend of the king following Queen Rowan's death, though it was believed by some that it was truly Loghain who ruled. He was the most vehement opponent of Maric's re-installation of the Grey Wardens in Ferelden, believing them Orlesian puppets. Loghain never shook off the hatred for Orlais.

Anora Mac Tir was made aware of her roots by her father, but was brought up as the daughter and heir of a Teyrn. She shunned the company of other children, preferring to study and practice archery and sword-fighting. She was betrothed to Prince Cailan, the king's only legitimate child, while they were children. The two became close companions, with many noting that Anora led the young prince around "like a puppy on a leash."

Anora grew to love Cailan, whom she eventually married, though she saw him as something of a child. While Cailan led Ferelden's armies, it was Anora who truly ruled the country in her husband's name, resenting the fact that she was not recognized for her work. When she became the Queen, she was no longer the heir for her father's teyrnir.

Leading up the Fifth Blight, Anora was approaching her thirtieth year, and with no signs of an heir, rumours spread that she was barren.

Teyrn Loghain became leader of Ferelden's army, and was called upon to lead the main force at the Battle of Ostagar, intended to stop the Fifth Blight before it truly began. When Loghain was supposed to charge the darkspawn, however, he pulled his forces out of the battle; abandoning King Cailan, a sizable portion of the Fereldan army, and nearly every Fereldan Warden to their fates.

Loghain desperately hunted the surviving Wardens, though his efforts were for naught, and triggered a civil war. One of the surviving Wardens turned out to be the bastard son of King Maric. The Wardens gained the support of Arl Eamon Guerrin, who was intent on seeing Maric's only surviving child put on the throne.

Eamon eventually called a Landsmeet, where he hoped to see Alistair installed as king and Loghain Mac Tir brought to justice for his withdrawal from the battle at Ostagar.

If Loghain was executed...

Arl Eamon was successful in his efforts and Loghain was beheaded before the Landsmeet.

If Loghain joined the Wardens and killed the archdemon...

Arl Eamon was successful in his attempts, though before action could be taken against the Teyrn, a Grey Warden halted his execution and suggested he undertake the Joining. This was allowed, though Alistair, Maric's bastard, was so infuriated by this decision that he either stormed away and ended up in Kirkwall as a drunk, was sentenced to death, or left the Grey Warden Order in protest. Loghain went on to end the Blight, sacrificing his own life in the process. Redeemed, he was remembered as a true hero. His daughter was declared queen and erected a statue of her father outside the Orlesian embassy. It became a shrine and was hugely popular with the people.

If Loghain became a Warden but did not kill the archdemon...

Arl Eamon was successful in his attempts, though before action could be taken against the Teyrn, a Grey Warden halted his execution and suggested he undertake the Joining. This was allowed, though Alistair, Maric's bastard, was so infuriated by this decision that he either stormed away and ended up in Kirkwall as a drunk, was sentenced to death, or left the Grey Warden Order in protest. Once the archdemon was killed, Loghain became the chief recruiter for the Wardens and was later sent to Montsimmard by the First Warden.

If Anora became sole Queen...

The Mac Tirs rose to be the royal family of Ferelden upon Anora's ascension as Queen. She proved an adept ruler, pouring money into Ferelden's coffers by opening trade with other nations, and building a university. Her courtiers proposed many suitors, though she rejected all of them on the grounds that none of them met the exceptional standard that she held: that of her father.

If Anora married Alistair...

At the behest of The Warden, Anora reluctantly married Alistair, the half-brother of her deceased spouse. The marriage (much like the one to Cailan) was one of convenience, with Anora taking care of administrative matters, while Alistair made appearances to the people.

If Anora married a hardened Alistair...

At the behest of The Warden, Anora reluctantly married Alistair, the half-brother of her deceased spouse. The marriage (much like the one to Cailan) was one of convenience, though they became skilled and beloved monarchs.

If Anora married the Warden...

Anora willingly wed the Warden who ended the Blight. Though the marriage was of convenience, Anora became more tender towards her spouse in time, and it was said that the two would usher in a new golden age, provided they did not end up vying for control.

If Anora was deposed...

Despite her best efforts to seize the throne, Anora Mac Tir was imprisoned on command of King Alistair.

If Loghain survives and takes part in the Dark Ritual...

Loghain is persuaded by the Warden to have sex with Morrigan in order to impregnate her and undergo the Dark Ritual that will save both his and the Warden's life. Morrigan has a son and names him Kieran, although more than likely he will never know he is a Mac Tir.

If Anora rules as Queen alone...

Previously wife to King Cailan, descendant of Calenhad and last of the Theirin bloodline to rule Ferelden, Queen Anora came into her own during the Fifth Blight. With the throne left vacant following her husband's death, she was confirmed as sole ruler with the support of the Hero of Ferelden—and this confirmation allowed her to rally her nation behind the Grey Wardens and the battle that ultimately ended the war with the darkspawn before it ever truly began.

If the Warden was Anora's Prince-Consort...

After the Blight's end, Anora and the Hero of Ferelden were married. She began the process of rebuilding a country devastated by the Blight's corruption... a process that is considered to have gone well, at least until the Hero of Ferelden's disappearance from the Fereldan court several years ago.

Since that time, concerns linger that Queen Anora has still not produced an heir, concerns that she has thus far successfully dismissed. The people believe her rule wise and well-reasoned, and they fully supported her decision to give the rebel mages safe harbor in Redcliffe following an impassioned speech she delivered in Denerim six months ago. When the rebel mages took over both the town and castle, forcing Arl Teagan to flee for the capital, her support among the nobility dwindled rapidly. What this will mean for her rule in the coming years—particularly with renewed interest from neighboring Orlais—remains to be seen.

If Alistair is King and Anora is Queen...

King Alistair Theirin was crowned the ruler of Ferelden after the end of the Fifth Blight; his people consider him a hero for fighting against the darkspawn as a Grey Warden. Few Wardens have ever left the secretive order, and he is the only of those who went on to rule a nation; Queen Anora, daughter of the legendary Teyrn Loghain, rules at his side. Although Ferelden has prospered under their reign, it was greatly weakened by the Blight. Tensions with neighboring Orlais have been high, and many believe a renewal of their long-standing conflict is inevitable.

If Loghain is a Grey Warden and doesn't survive the events of Adamant Fortress...

Loghain sacrifices himself in the Fade to atone for all the harm the Grey Wardens have done during the War against the Elder One. With Loghain distracting the Nightmare demon in the Fade, Hawke and the the Inquisitor are given a chance to escape. Loghain likely dies in the Fade.

If Loghain is a Grey Warden and survives the events of Adamant Fortress...

After the Champion of Kirkwall's sacrifice in the Fade, giving him and the Inquisitor a chance to escape, Loghain left to report to the Grey Warden leadership at the fortress of Weisshaupt in the Anderfels.
