The Lords of Fortune are a renowned guild of treasure hunters and dungeoneers based out of Rivain.[1]
Background[]
The Lords of Fortune are considered to be among the best treasure hunters in Thedas. Beyond recovering treasure from caves and dungeons, Lords of Fortune have also been known to pursue monster bounties[2] and steal from rich collectors.[3] For an added cost, they also offer protection to those employers that accompany them on treasure hunting expeditions.[1]
According to Taash, the Lords of Fortune generally hunt for salvage from old forgotten ruins. The Lords also employ a consultant, such as Taash's mother Shathann, to inform the Lords if any of the artifacts they've acquired are important to a different culture and appraises what it's worth. The Lords would secure cultural and magical artifacts from the looting and destruction of an invading enemy force. The Lords would return the important, cultural artifacts to the ethnic groups where they belong for a finder's fee, such as when they return important Qunari artifacts to the Qunari.[4]
The Lords rely on the cooperation of the Rivaini nobles since the success of the Lords' expeditions relied on Rivaini authorities looking the other way.[5] The Rivaini Royal Guard complained about the Lords' activities but when the Antaam invaded Rivain, Rivaini authorities began to see the benefits of having a bunch of heavily armed people on their side.[4]
The Lords of Fortune are known for their colorful outfits, sashes, capes, belts, scarves, and charms, and for wearing their treasure; though such display is reserved to those Lords of Fortune that survive more than a year or two.[2]
Some Lords of Fortune specialize in disguises and changing accents.[6]

Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights[]
Luck in the Gardens
- "Hollix" is hired by Dorian Pavus to hunt and kill the Cekorax, a previously unknown type of monster that recently appeared in Minrathous and has been killing its victims by beheading them. With the help of Dorian, Maevaris Tilani, and Mizzy, a local child who witnessed one of the first attacks, Hollix successfully kills the Cekorax. Hollix offers Mizzy a chance to learn more from the Lords of Fortune in Rivain, but Mizzy declines, choosing to stay behind to take care of her family instead.
Genitivi Dies in the End
- Mateo accompanies Brother Genitivi, (Formerly) Sister Laudine, and Philliam, a Bard! on their expedition into the Silent Plains. His expertise is instrumental to their discovery of an ancient elven library that "fell" into the Deep Roads when Arlathan did. According to Philliam's retelling of their adventure, Mateo is the only one to survive when Rasaan attacks the expedition, though in truth they are all hiding in Rivain with Mateo and some of his fellow Lords of Fortune.
Herold Had the Plan
- Bharv, Herold, and Elim steal an amulet from a lockbox at the Grand Tourney in Starkhaven. Their robbery goes wrong when their hired help, Panzstott, deviates from the plan by stealing the Celebrant. Herold is killed during their escape. Elim and Panzstott are later killed by Starkhaven guards, who retrieve the Celebrant, but leave the amulet behind. As the amulet is imbued with healing powers, this saves Bharv's life. He completes the job by handing the amulet over to Vaea, so she can bring it north with her to Tevinter and ease the suffering caused by the Antaam's invasion.
