Marquis Lambert Valmont was an Orlesian captain who distinguished himself at the Battle of Ayesleigh in the Fourth Blight. His eldest son, Alphonse Valmont, went on to become the first Valmont emperor of Orlais.

Background[]

In 5:24 Exalted,[1] Lambert Valmont was a young captain serving in the Orlesian army during the Fourth Blight. At the Battle of Ayesleigh, he disregarded orders and led his men to relieve the Antivan forces and rescue them from sure destruction. Initially, his superiors were displeased and attributed his actions to a supposed infatuation with an Antivan camp follower. However, when it came to light that the Antivan forces were led by King Azar Adalberto Campana, it both cemented the political alliance between Antiva and Orlais and made Lambert Valmont an Antivan hero. The Antivan King thus granted Valmont the hand of one of his daughters in marriage and raised him to the status of nobility. A lion adorned his newly created heraldry, becoming the symbol of House Valmont. The Orlesian Emperor was forced to grant him a marquisate in response. Lambert Valmont's return to Val Royeaux with both a noble title and new royal wife earned him the nickname of "the Swaggering Lion" from jealous nobles, which he embraced.[2]

Lambert Valmont went on to father four sons—Alphonse, Isidore d'Arlesans, Yvon of Savrenne, and Stephan of Val Montaigne. Alphonse would become the first Valmont emperor of Orlais[2][3] by the year 5:71 Exalted, nearly half an age after his father's rise to noble status.[4]

Lambert also had a daughter, who later became Divine Amara III.[5]
