The Second Battle of Kirkwall was an engagement between the mages of the Kirkwall Circle and the templars stationed in the city.

Prelude

After the death of Lord Viscount Marlowe Dumar in 9:34 Dragon Age, Knight-Commander Meredith of the templars takes stewardship of Kirkwall at the Chantry's request. During the next three years, she stonewalls the election of a new viscount and turns the city into a police state run by the templars. Raids and crackdowns take place, with all suspects being immediately incarcerated without distinction. Insurrections against the templars are also made, attacks that could only be the work of magic. The situation continued to escalate with both Meredith's harsh methods and the Resolutionist mage fraternity coming to blows against each other. The civilians cry for the Champion of Kirkwall to deliver salvation to the city.

Things come to a head when Anders, an apostate healer and ex-Grey Warden who is merged with a spirit of Justice, concludes that the friction between the Circle and templars has gone on for too long and that no one should forget the contributions of mages during the Fifth Blight. As a message to all of Thedas, he destroys the Kirkwall Chantry in a grand display of magic and explosives, killing Grand Cleric Elthina in the process, thus removing the chance of compromise because in his views there is no compromise. Wasting no time blaming the mages, Knight-Commander Meredith invokes the Right of Annulment to execute all the mages in Kirkwall, with First Enchanter Orsino gathering the Circle together in self-defense.

The Battle

Battles were waged across Kirkwall. The mages were soon cornered at the Gallows. Meredith gathered the whole of the Templar Order to storm the Gallows and a slaughter of all mages within it. Seeing no way out, Orsino used a blood magic ritual to merge with the dead bodies of his charges, becoming a monstrous abomination to take the fight to Meredith. The Champion, forced to intervene in these matters, managed to kill Orsino.

The next matter was Meredith, who accused the Champion of starting the whole ordeal. Her second-in command, Knight-Captain Cullen, became opposed to her order to execute rather than arrest the Champion and was already beginning to believe the rumors that she had gone insane. Meredith then became more paranoid, accusing all of her subordinates of being blood mage thralls. Alone, she fought against the Champion and lost, becoming petrified in the red lyrium her sword was composed of.

Aftermath

News of the battle spread beyond Kirkwall's borders. The Champion's name became a rallying cry and incited all the Circles in other nations and cities to rise up against the templars, bringing Thedas to the brink of a war between the mages and Templars.
