Joyous II was Divine of the Chantry between 3:86 and 3:99 Towers. The Schism, which saw the Chantry split into the Orlesian Chantry and the Imperial Chantry, occurred during her reign.
Background[]
Joyous II was elected Divine in 3:86 Towers.[1] That same year, she presided over the debate on the practice of dowsing, which had been unsuccessfully investigated by the Chantry several times in an effort to find out whether it was magical in nature. Divine Joyous II declared that the practice was freely permitted by the Chantry on the grounds that dowsers never attempted to use their skills for nefarious purposes.[2]
In 3:87 Towers, after learning that the Tevinter Chantry had revised the Chant of Light to reflect their interpretation of the Maker's second commandment, that magic best serves man by ruling over him and not the other way around, Divine Joyous II demanded that the Tevinter Chant be revised to conform to the Orlesian Chant. When Tevinter refused, the Divine declared their entire clergy heretics. The Archon retaliated by appointing Grand Cleric Valhail, who was not only a man but a mage of the Circle of Magi, as Divine of the Tevinter Chantry. In the south, the Imperial Divine became known as the "Black Divine."[3]
Sometime during her reign, Joyous II decided against changing the depiction of the constellation Kios to that of a dove.[4]
Joyous II's death in 3:99 Towers was celebrated in Minrathous and declared a holiday by the Black Divine. The Orlesian Chantry named the next age the Black Age as they called for retribution against the "false" Black Divine of the North. Four Exalted Marches were eventually called against the Imperial Chantry between 4:40 Black and 5:10 Exalted, though they did little but cement the separation between the two Chantries.
