Dragon Age: Origins has a shared-party, list inventory. Items have no weight; instead there is a limit to the number of items you can carry. The Warden begins with a limit of 70 non-plot and unequipped items and can purchase backpacks that increase the limit by 10, up to a total of 125 on the Xbox 360 and PC. The PS3 version of the game is limited to 120 items. Technically, you can exceed this cap: the limit only prevents you from picking up or buying more items, but it doesn't affect item given through scripts or conversations; namely items added by the activation of a promotional DLC, by asking your dog to find something, or by talking with certain quest-related NPCs.

Further backpacks do not increase the maximum inventory beyond 125 (or 120 in the case of the PS3). A stack of up to 99 of the same item -- fire arrows, for example -- counts as one unit. 100 fire arrows would require at least two stacks. Plot items do not count towards the inventory limit.

The inventory is tabbed, allowing the player to sort between weapons, armor, accessories (such as belts and rings), crafting supplies, miscellaneous items (such as Gifts) and plot and quest items. The user may also sort by type, alphabetically, or in LIFO order, with the newest items at the top.

The Warden's Keep DLC, once completed, offers a party chest providing significant additional inventory for non-plot items. Craig Graff, a Bioware developer, has also made available an unsupported party chest mod.
