House Valmont has been the ruling imperial house of Orlais since the end of the Exalted Age.

Lambert adopted the lion as his symbol, a creature native to Eastern Thedas. When Lambert returned to Orlais the Emperor felt obligated to follow suit and granted him a Marquisate. Celene's reign was controversial from the start, and in 9:40 her cousin Grand Duke Gaspard de Chalons rose in rebellion against her, starting the War of the Lions.
If Empress Celene is assassinated:
House Valmont lost its royal status when Empress Celene was murdered by her cousin and secret Venatori agent, Florianne de Chalons. With Celene and Florianne both removed from the line of succession, the throne passed to the now Emperor, Gaspard de Chalons.
