House Campana is the royal family of Antiva.
Background[]
The royal line in Antiva has remained unbroken for two and a half thousand years, but the ruling family holds so little actual power that most people outside of Antiva believe that it has no king at all.[1] The true power is held by a group of merchant princes.[2]
House Campana rose to prominence during the Black Age when King Alonzo Campana[note 1] married Asha Subira Bahadur, Gana of Ayesleigh. Queen Asha wanted to strengthen Antiva's position in Thedosian politics. To achieve this goal, she arranged marriages for her children and grandchildren in strategically selected families across the continent. Within thirty years, Antiva was so well connected that any hostile act would force half of Thedas into warfare.[3][4] As a result, House Campana is related to the ruling families of Orlais, Nevarra, Starkhaven and the Anderfels, as well as with some magisters of the Tevinter Imperium.[5] Queen Asha is sometimes called the "Queen Mother of Thedas".[4]
The Antivan branch of House Campana almost went extinct in the Fourth Blight. Antiva was the first nation to be attacked by the darkspawn; the horde invaded the capital Antiva City early during the Blight. King Elaudio refused to evacuate the population in time, which caused the Royal Guard to turn on him and his family. In consequence, several members of the royalty and nobility were killed, including King Elaudio. His wife, Queen Giuvana, survived the revolt thanks to the Grey Wardens' protection, but she died in the following evacuation attempt. This event left Antiva without leadership.[6] However, a surviving member of House Campana,[note 2] Azar Adalberto Campana, took the Antivan throne and led the Antivan forces against the darkspawn. During the final battle of the Fourth Blight, King Azar and his forces got surrounded; fortunately, he was rescued by an Orlesian captain, Lambert Valmont. After the Blight ended, one of King Azar's daughters married Lambert. Their son Alphonse overthrew Xavier Drakon and established a new dynasty in Orlais.[7]
House Campana continues to stay involved in Thedosian politics by means of marriage; in the late Blessed Age, Emilia Campana wed Emperor Judicael Valmont II and bore him two sons.[8]

Notes[]
- Queen Asha's husband is referred to either as "Alonzo"[3] or "Dario".[4] It's unclear whether he used both of these names, changed his name after ascending the Antivan throne, or if it's a continuity error.
- Dragon Age: The World of Thedas, vol. 1, p. 64 and Dragon Age: Last Flight, chapter 7 state that the entire royal family of Antiva was lost in the wake of the Fourth Blight, however, this doesn't seem to be the case, as King Azar Adalberto Campana led the Antivan forces in the final battle.[7]
