Hawke is the central protagonist of Dragon Age II. Hawke is fully voiced, can be either male or female, has a fully customizable appearance and, as in Dragon Age: Origins, can be a mage, rogue or warrior.[1][2][3][4] The default name for male characters is Garrett.[5] The default name for female characters is Marian.[6]
Background
Hawke is a human who lived in Lothering during the Blight in Ferelden, escaping the darkspawn attack by fleeing north to the Free Marches and eventually rising to become "the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age".[7] Along the way the title of "The Champion of Kirkwall" is earned. Over the course of the game's 10-year timeline, players' actions and choices will determine Hawke's history, relationships, and regrets...all in service to answering the larger question: Who is the Champion of Kirkwall?[8]
Hawke's father was an apostate mage,[9] who died several years before the beginning of the game, while their mother's maiden name is Amell, who is a noble from Kirkwall.[10] Hawke's sister Bethany is an apostate mage also and is available as a party companion[11]. The future Champion of Kirkwall also has a warrior brother named Carver.[12]

- "Castillon isn't a very happy person, is he? Maybe he needs a new hobby."
- "Not to interrupt, but the Blight's not going to wait while we stand here pointing fingers."
- (To Carver) "I'm in charge. You do what I say!"
- (Sarcastically to Wesley) "The wrath of the templars is terrible indeed."
- (to Bethany, after she says that they can't just wander aimlessly) " As long as we wander aimlessly away from the Blight, I'm happy."
- (to Carver/Bethany in the first scene) " Perhaps we'll be lucky and they'll run out of darkspawn."
