Haven is a small village in the Frostback Mountains. It is not marked on most maps and is widely unheard of. Privacy is very important to the villagers of Haven and they do not welcome strangers kindly.

Background

While traditions in larger, less remote and more welcoming parts of Ferelden grew and evolved over time, Haven's intense privacy concerns means that they practice older traditions, specifically religious ones, that now seem strange to outsiders. For example, they have a male priest, which is not a convention allowed outside of the Imperial Chantry.

A violent cult named the Disciples of Andraste has taken root here, and they fanatically guard the Urn of Andraste from all outsiders. Because he seeks the Urn, Brother Genitivi is being held against his will in Haven. He is rescued after his discovery in a secret room, once Father Eirik and the cultists within the village chantry have been killed.

After completing the affair with the ashes, a graveyard is established behind the right house at the village entrance as a memorial for the cult members killed in the conflict with The Warden.

Eventually the village of Haven was abandoned by the local villagers and left to fall into disrepair.

Haven (Inquisition)2

Haven as the Inquisition's Stronghold

At the request of Divine Justinia V in 9:35 Dragon Age, Haven was restored and brought back into the fold of the Maker, giving shelter for the pilgrims who come to visit the Temple of Sacred Ashes. Following the events at the Conclave, Haven serves as the initial base of the re-established Inquisition. After the Inquisitor seals the Breach, the town is attacked by Corypheus's army. Though the Inquisition manages to bury a portion of Corypheus's army under an avalanche, the people in Haven are effectively trapped. Chancellor Roderick, however, reveals that he knows of a route which can be used to escape. The Inquisitor buys them time by realigning a trebuchet to cause another avalanche to bury the village. After a brief confrontation with Corypheus, the Inquisitor sets off the avalanche and escapes into a small cavern, while Corypheus' dragon flies him to safety.

With the loss of Haven, the Inquisition elects to relocate to the fortress of Skyhold.

Following the battle and the Inquisition's arrival at Skyhold, a monument is built at Haven to commemorate the villagers and soldiers that lost their lives in the attack.

Notes

  • (Origins) This location is labeled "The Village of Haven".
  • (Inquisition) If the Inquisitor is not a rogue they can ask Sera to unlock the doors in the cellars of the chantry.
    • Interact with one of the locked doors and the message "Requires a rogue" will appear, unlocking the necessary dialogue option with Sera ("I need a lock picked."). On PC, if the message does not appear, try going into mouselook mode and using the interact button instead of the mouse.
  • (Inquisition) Masterwork schematics imported in Haven using the Golden Nug do not have masterwork slots available. The schematics will function as intended after relocating to Skyhold.

Trivia

  • (Origins) If you return to the village of Haven after completing the Urn of Sacred Ashes, a graveyard (previously not accessible) becomes available behind one of the buildings in the lower village. The gravestones have entertaining messages from the development team.
  • (Origins) The Avvars were originally supposed to be involved in the quest The Urn of Sacred Ashes. During production, one of the origin backstories was set to be an Avvar from Haven. However, this was later changed as the team did not have the resources to develop a new art style for the barbarians. [confirmation needed]
