Haunted is a companion quest for Varric in Dragon Age II.
Acquisition
This quest is started when you speak to Varric in the The Hanged Man during Act 3, after you've finished the main quest On The Loose.
Walkthrough
Go to Hightown at night and enter Bartrand's Estate. Make your way through the house until you can go upstairs and into the center room. After a cut scene you will be face with an Ethereal Golem. He will disappear after a short time and spawn several shades which you will have to defeat before he becomes attackable again.
After the battle you find a piece of the idol which you have the option to let let Varric keep, giving him three extra rune slots on Bianca and 
Varric: friendship (+10),
Anders: rivalry (+5) or giving to Sandal who will make a speed rune out of it and Anders: friendship (+5), Sebastian: friendship (+10) . Having maximum friendship with Anders will cause no disapproval. Denying Varric the relic results in Varric: rivalry (+10).
Also after the battle, the room at the top of the stairs on the right, which was previously locked, will unlock. Visit it to loot a master difficulty chest and examine a ledger which will trigger a cutscene with Varric.
Rewards
There are two possible outcomes:
- Varric's armor will change names to Varric's Armored Leather Duster (losing all current runes) and Bianca will be upgraded with 3 additional rune slots (4 total) if Hawke allows him to keep the shard. You will also receive the Codex entry for Bianca.
- Sandal will make you the Primeval Lyrium Rune from the shard, which increases attack speed (varies by weapon strength)
Notes
When you're making your way through the house, doors will be locked, but after a cutscene, they will open. You will see ghosts, things will throw them self at you or just hover around, doors will open and close, and Varric will claim to hear voices, but nothing will happen until you reach the last room.
