Harwen Raleigh is the Commander of the Hard Line.

Background

A displaced noble who lost his lands to the Orlesians, his capable troops, known as The Hard Line, were a formidable asset to the Fereldan cause during the rebellion. Unfortunately, his penchant for rape, torture and other war crimes was not as appreciated by Maric, Ferelden's new king. Thus he was left without lands after the war ended; a brutal man with a deep hatred for Orlais. He later found employment with Urien, Arl of Denerim where he and his troops were assigned to guard the Arl of Denerim's Estate.

Desiring a chance for glory, Releigh conspired with the Orlesian bard Marjolaine to obtain stolen Orlesian military intelligence; all for a ploy to attack Orlais and take back his lost land. He also has a brutal penchant to imprison and torture dissenters and minor offenders in the dungeons beneath the estate before auctioning them off to slavers, including females which he abused sexually.

He is first encountered at the Arl of Denerim's estate when Leliana's mentor Marjolaine has seduced and distracted him while Leliana's team is infiltrating the estate to plant some stolen documents. His history is further explored in a trio of codex entries detailing his exploits in the recent war between Orlais and Ferelden. After Marjolaine's betrayal, Leliana learns firsthand just how well-deserved his reputation is. She is at his mercy for a full week before Revered Mother Dorothea assists in her escaping the Estate dungeons, along with many of his other victims. He is then tracked down by Leliana and confronted at the Forlorn Cove in the Arling of Amaranthine and will either be killed by Leliana or Silas Corthwaite.

Notes

One of Raleigh's victims in the Arl's dungeons is an elven woman named Adaia, who is the mother of The Warden in the City Elf Origin.
