Harvester are the byproduct of Amgarrak's experiments on golems, a monstrous Abomination made from the corpses of its victims. They sustains themselves on the dead, whether long-deceased or freshly killed.

Background
The first Harvester was created by accident when the smiths of Amgarrak were experimenting on Caridin's work with the hope of recreating and improving it. The smiths used dead casteless dwarves bodies instead of metal and stone, claiming that "It would be a honor for a casteless dwarf to die in such way". Nereda, the Tevinter mage in Amgarrak, sealed a Fade spirit inside a construct made out of flesh and bone. When the construct came alive, the head removed itself from the body and disappeared, becoming the first Harvester. It killed numerous people in the thaig and after witnessing what their twisted creation was capable of, they were forced to trap it in a level of the Fade via the use of the Lyrium Wells and seal the thaig. Since then, people have long forgotten about both the Harvesters and the thaig.

Harvesters set about gathering the flesh of the dead to add to they bodies to create a sort of flesh golem which they use like an armor. It seems that the Harvesters is capable of manipulating the Lyrium Wells and using them to its advantage. While battling against the The Warden-Commander, it shifts him/her and his/her party through different levels of the Fade in order to become more powerful.

It's also seen that with a secret ritual of Blood Magic, a mage alive can merge with corpses and become a Harvester with its flesh golem.

Involvement
The Golems of Amgarrak
Dragon Age II
Trivia
* While it is easy to mistake a Harvester for a golem of flesh and bone, it is untrue. Because a demon was drawn from the Fade to animate the eventual-Harvester, it is technically an Abomination similar to the possession of other objects, e.g. not unlike the creation of Sylvans and undead.

* However, for bonuses and such, the Harvester counts as a darkspawn.
