Halamshiral is a city in Orlais and the former capital of the Dales. It is situated in the eastern part of the country south of the Waking Sea and close to the border with Ferelden.
History
Halamshiral was built by the elves at the end of The Long Walk in the Ancient Age, its name meaning "the end of the journey" in the elven language. It was built just off the Imperial Highway so that elves from all corners of the world could find it easily by simply following the Highway. The city was under elven control for nearly 400 years.
During the Exalted March against the Dales the city was conquered by Orlais.
Involvement
The Masked Empire
The city elves of Halamshiral start to rebel after Lemet, a well-liked elven trader, is brutally killed for throwing a rock at Lord Mainserai's coach. The elven slums in Halamshiral are burned down by order of Empress Celene to quell the uprising. However, she was unprepared for an ambush by Grand Duke Gaspard de Chalons, who attempted to kill Celene to claim the throne for himself. The Empress' forces were routed, Celene herself fled into the countryside with her champion and Orlais descended into chaos. Gaspard was able to coerce Comte Pierre into telling him Celene's intended destination by threatening to burn down his city.[2]
Celene later reclaimed Halamshiral after summoning Pierre to the Winter Palace and having him reaffirm his loyalty.
Culture
Halamshiral is mostly populated by elves and therefore has no alienage. Humans that form the privileged minority live separately in the High Quarter instead.[3]
Empress Celene I has a Winter Palace in Halamshiral.[4]
According to Fenris, a large Arlathvhen (gathering of elven clans) is about to commence in Halamshiral.[5]
