There are several different types of gems that you will find throughout the game. They typically appear under the "Other" category in your inventory.

Note that there are also special gems that can be used as gifts. They are easily distinguished with the purple word "gift" when you examine them in the inventory. See the article on Gifts for more info about these special gems.

Uses

A common question is whether gems are just to be sold to the vendor, or do they have an other purpose? They answer is it depends on the gem.

What the game calls "middle gems", which includes Sapphires, Topaz, Malachites, and Amethysts, can be turned in to help your allies after you've finished part of the story.
Additionally, 10 Garnet gems are also used for a one-time quest.
