Garnet is one of the many gems that you can find in the game.
There are in fact actually two types of garnets: the normal variety, and the Remarkable Garnet.
The normal garnet is used in a quest named Untraceable. You will need to collect 10 of them.
The Remarkable Garnet is a gift, and will be highly valued by Shale. It can be found in the Wonders of Thedas Store in Denerim's Market District.

The name "garnet" may come from either the Middle English word gernet meaning 'dark red', or the Latin granatus ("grain"), possibly a reference to the Punica granatum ("pomegranate"), a plant with red seeds similar in shape, size, and color to some garnet crystals.
