“It is in the worst of times that people need to cleave together the strongest.”
Ser Gareth Mac Tir[1] is the father of Loghain Mac Tir and the grandfather of Anora Mac Tir.
Involvement[]
Gareth's family originally hailed from Oswin.[2] He was once a sergeant-at-arms in the service of King Brandel Theirin, but went on to become a farmer. One year Gareth was unable to pay the increased taxes that the Orlesian King Meghren had imposed on the populace. As punishment, an Orlesian commander raped and murdered his wife in front of him and his son. Afterwards, Gareth killed the commander, but he and his son had to abandon their home and live in the wilds. Eventually, he went on to lead a band of rebels in the Southron Hills with Sister Ailis.
During their travels, Gareth once led an outlaw camp too close to a nest of blight wolves. As a result, fourteen people within the camp were killed, six of them children. Gareth wished to remove himself from the position of leadership, but Sister Ailis helped convince him to stay.
After the death of the Rebel Queen Moira Theirin, her son, Maric Theirin, stumbled upon Gareth's group as he fled her killers. Gareth's rebels took care of him and treated his wounds without knowing Maric's real identity. When Orlesian forces surrounded Gareth's camp and Maric revealed his identity, he ordered Loghain to escort the King out of the camp while he allowed them to escape by distracting the encroaching forces with some of his men. For his sacrifice, Maric knighted him before they escaped.
During his initial attack, Gareth manages to hold back the Orlesian forces with his men for a time until Loghain and Maric reach the edge of the camp. From afar the two then witnessed Gareth's last stand against dozens of enemy soldiers (albeit obscured by smoke and the rushing soldiers), hearing his final battle cry which ended abruptly.
Notes[]
- While Codex entry: Arms of Mac Tir states that the surname Mac Tir was not inherited but bestowed on Loghain by King Maric after the Battle of River Dane, both Gareth and Loghain are referred to as "Mac Tir" prior to the battle. It also states that "Mac Tir" means "son of the land," and that Gareth would have introduced himself as "of Oswin" or "ban Aehswin" in the Old Tongue.[2]
