The Gallows Courtyard is the forecourt of the Gallows and home to the merchant market. The area is only accessible during the day. Although this is the first area Hawke visits upon arriving in the city, it will not be accessible again until either the, Enemies Among Us, Family History or the Wayward Son quests are activated.

Visiting the area with Fenris[]
The first time you visit the Gallows Courtyard with Fenris, he will wonder if the Gallows is more effective than the Circle of Magi from the Tevinter Imperium. If Hawke is a mage, then he will ask you if it's wise for you to be here. If Hawke is not a mage and another mage companion is there, then he will ask if you are sure about being here considering the company you are with. Your companions will also react to your opinion on the Circle of Magi:
- "It's wrong to oppress mages."
- Fenris: rivalry (+15)
- Anders: friendship (+5)
- Bethany: friendship (+5)
- Merrill: friendship (+5)
- "The Circle doesn't work."
- Fenris: rivalry (+5)
- "The Circle is necessary."

After the discussion, Hawke will gain friendship and/or rivalry with party members whom were affected directly by this debate, and will obtain Codex entry: Tevinter: The Magisters.
After Enemies Among Us[]
If Hawke returns to speak to Cullen after completing Enemies Among Us, Hawke can gain minor changes to friendship and rivalry.
If Hawke declares that the order needs to change:
