The Gallows Courtyard is the forecourt of the Gallows and home to the merchant market. The area is only accessible during the day. Although this is the first area Hawke visits upon arriving in the city, it will not be accessible again until the Wayward Son, Enemies Among Us, or Family History quest is activated.

If Hawke is a mage, then he will ask you if it's wise for you to be here. If Hawke is not a mage and another mage companion is there, then he will ask if you are sure about being here considering the company you are with. Your companions will also react to your opinion on the Circle of Magi:

- "The Circle doesn't work."
- "The Circle is necessary."
