I honestly think it was a mass exodus. The Qunari got into it with each other over the legitimacy of the Qun. The Sarebaas blew up their island/continent in a civil/holy war. The followers of Koslun came out on top and dub themselves "People of the Qun" They set sail to find a new home. This both explains why they're on Thedas as well as their extreme stigmatization of magic. - [[User:Soulofshezarr]]

We all have imagination, so what's your speculation about reason of qunari leaving their original land? Some scholars think they come from an unknown land on east from Amarantine Ocean. I imagined few scenarios about their arrival.

  • Koslun's philosophy was very controversial in the qunari original homeland, so to escape his political enemy he and his followers stole some ships and travelled to other land unknown to them, it was Thedas. When they arrived they immadiatelly started an invasion on Par Volen. Rest of the story you already know.
  • Qunari left their island because they already took all what was worth of taking. Their ground became barren and animals started to extinct, so they searched new land.
  • Ogres are darkspawn of qunari, so maybe the real 5th blight began on their contintent and they were forced to leave it. Now darkspawns occupate their land and Urthemiel was actually archdemon of 6th, not 5th Blight.
  • Qunari were simply banished by other race from their continent.

So what are your ideas for reasons qunari left their original homeland?78.8.102.74 (talk) 17:42, March 4, 2013 (UTC)Just call me Dalish fan.

Couple of things;

  • Ogres appeared sometime after the 4th Blight and presumably after the Qunari arrived in Thedas.
  • The higher Commanders of the Grey know the locations of where the Old Gods are buried, and are likely to dream when an Archdemon has awakened.
  • To all intents and purposes, the Qunari are an Empire, no matter how they describe it, empires need to expand.
  • Or the kossith homeland underwent some catastrophe and they had to evacuate.

Right now though, the Qunari and their origins are still something of a mystery and will remain so until Bioware flesh them out. --Madasamadthing (talk) 18:33, March 4, 2013 (UTC)

That's why we speculate.78.8.102.74 (talk) 18:38, March 4, 2013 (UTC)Just call me Dalish fan.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but ogres existed in previous Blights as well, possibly even the first one, as seen in the opening cinematics. Also, I call BS about the Grey Wardens knowing about the Old Gods. There is no edivence to support it. Henio0 (talk) 22:16, March 4, 2013 (UTC)

Likely, we will never find out. It's like with Nords in the Elder Scrolls series and the black peope in Fable - they came on a ship and only Thunder and Whisper survived, I believe. But was I to venture a guess, I'd say maybe they were experimenting with lyrium. It made their hair white, like Fenris's (or Geralt's hair in the Witcher, it turned white because of all the mutagens) and extensive experimentation made their land barren. Kind of like The Observers in Fringe series - they surpassed the humans many times over, but at the cost of contaminating the land. Henio0 (talk) 22:16, March 4, 2013 (UTC)

Because Fippy Darkpaw drove them out after they ruined their own lands? Personally I think the Quinari military caste abandoned the rest of quinari society to what they feel is moral decay. The military could not stand by and watch as their other castes slipped away from the "true path" and at the same time they could not abandon their vows to not take over the government by force. So they left en masse to start a new society for the Qun. At least that makes sense to me. This is pure speculation and nothing but. The.Huntress (talk) 22:24, March 4, 2013 (UTC)

I'm of the mind that Koslun was a Defector From Decadence, that the original species was as bloated, corrupt, and wasteful as the Tevinters at their height and perhaps Orlais in the present. Eventually it all fell apart: The upper classes treated their support systems like shit, the servants and masons and whatnot became poor and sick and couldn't work the lands, everything went barren, the nobles blamed the poor for being lazy and taxed/seized what little they had to buy themselves a few more minutes of stuffing their faces, Peasant Revolution, the whole empire collapsed beyond repair in a bloody and costly war. Koslun developed the Qun as a means of avoiding this in the future, used qamek as a necessary evil to indoctrinate the survivors, built the dreadnoughts (if they didn't already exist) and brought the people to Thedas to start over and eventually "enlighten" any other races that might exist out there. There's some evidence for this in the way the Arishok is disgusted by Kirkwall and its nobility in particular, how they "feed and feed" until the grass is bare. It's a disdain that would be inborn for the Qunari, especially the leader of their military arm. RShepard227 (talk) 22:43, March 4, 2013 (UTC)

Actually. The Old God thing is NOT BS. In The Calling, Bregan, the Orlesian Warden-Commander knew. Im sure those above him would know. --Did I ever tell you the definition of redundancy? 01:37, March 8, 2013 (UTC)

As I recall, humans and elves were not native to the land currently known as Thedas either. The idea that the Qunari are not native to Thedas probably developed out of a need to portray them as foreign conquerors.

If we consider the various races' real-world analogues, the Qunari would almost certainly be the Turks due to their mastery of gunpowder and rivalry with Tevinter. From the European perspective, the Turks emerged relatively quickly from a far-away land, in this case Central Asia. 66.57.65.244 (talk) 03:24, March 8, 2013 (UTC)

Sorry. But it was the Chinese, one can compare the Qunari to. The Qun bears resemblance to Confucianism, and China first developed gunpowder. Not Turks. --Did I ever tell you the definition of redundancy? 03:28, March 8, 2013 (UTC)

Actually, one can compare the Qunari to whomever they wish- it's a subjective matter.

The way I imagine it, the Qun had succesfully achieved dominance in their home land and came to Thedas to continue the spread of their philosophy. ----Isolationistmagi 05:16, March 8, 2013 (UTC)

I never got the impression that they were forced from their homeland, from what I understood they simply sent out explorers and started colonizing what new territories they found, like most people have done throughout history. I think there are still Kossith in their homeland and that they probably still have contact with them, the reason that not more have arrived might be the same reason that the qunari that arrived in Kirkwall didn't receive any reinforcements, because they were sent on a demand of the qun and it had to be completed, and perhaps this demand was to conquer Thedas or at least bring the enlightenment of the qun to the people of Thedas, this demand has in that case not been fulfilled Blighter (talk) 23:04, March 8, 2013 (UTC)

I think Blighter has it right. The Qunari seen in Thedas are just colonizing Qunari. It's like the Vikings heading across the ocean from Scandinavia in exploration and then colonizing Iceland and Greenland. 01:44, March 9, 2013 (UTC)
