Varric, without a doubt, I still havent forgiven Alistair for dumping my Dalish elf female warden, sent the bastard to his death against the archdemon for that >:) But Varric is just so awesome in every way, he is best friend material and never leaves your side no matter what stupid crap you do, the same cant be said for Alistair.

Alistair. My first play through, my last play through, and every play in between Alistair is a cornerstone of the party in DA:O. I really do love Varric - an awesome character who I feel it was an injustice to not allow a romance with - but I left the archers out of my DA2 parties when possible. I did take Varric along for Legacy because he was a perfect fit for it. But when it came to a character that I felt would always have your back, that was Aveline. Even though it was possible to flub the relationship so badly that she could oppose you in Act 3, I never managed to do that. {{User:LegionnaireScout/sig}} 11:42, October 8, 2011 (UTC)

So now playing through DA2 for the 3rd time and having done so with Origins as well, I was wondering what the rest of you thought about who was the better companion- Alistar or Varric? Personally, I can see where both have their place in their respective roles, but Varric seems like less of a wuss than Alistar ever is! And the plot lines want to make this guy king?! Thoughts??? (ViscountHawke (talk) 13:36, October 6, 2011 (UTC))

Alistair. He grows on me and become one of my trusted companions, can't say the same with Varric. That's just me though. Oh and I like people who are complex, Varric: You get what you see, not that it is a bad thing --NobleHumanRocks (talk) 14:28, October 6, 2011 (UTC)

Alistair. I love Varric, I really do, he is my favorite DA2 character. They both fill that perfect example of a ‘best friend a person could have’ but Alistair got there first, and he’s always there throughout the entire game where as in DA2, you get the feeling that when Hawke and Varric aren’t running around together, they’ll meet up for an occasional drink, but they’re not ALWAYS together. True, circumstances are completely different but Alistair was the first companion you met in the first game, if not for love, I’d say Alistair even if it’s just for nostalgia of when you first popped DAO into your respective system. This is a hard choice, as they're both great characters. But I'm going to go with Varric, if only because the previous two posters picked Alistair. :) My Wardens have to groom Alistair for the throne and practically force it on him, while my Hawkes and Varric just sit back sharing a pint at the Hanged Man after killing bad guys all day. Gruedragon (talk) 15:21, October 6, 2011 (UTC)

I'm curious about criteria you want to compare these side by side. They have different roles as far as party combinations go (warrior tank and rogue damage dealer), they're different Bioware's tired old archetypes, they aren't even remotely alike personality-wise. It's so...apples and oranges. Dorquemada (talk) 16:17, October 6, 2011 (UTC)

Alistair. I like Varric fine, but Alistair is like a brother to me. Out of any companions, it's always Alistair first. --Ygrain (talk) 20:16, October 6, 2011 (UTC)

Well, considering I keep killing Alistair.. "Be a man, for once." Besides. Varric fulfills my comic relief companion role nicely, without the constant whining. Neither of them hold a candle to Oghren, anyway. Spectaculous!

I hate you. Just saying. HomelyDrugAddict (talk) 01:58, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

This has poll written all over it.

Anyway this is a close one. But for me Varric snags it. He kind of reminds me Xander Harris. Which is some what ironic as Alistair was apparently inspired by him. Andy the Black (talk) 22:52, October 6, 2011 (UTC)

VARRIC, without a doubt. He's totally up there in my top five all-time favorite companions in games. Second only to Garrus from ME. Varric, is so awesome, no Champion can live without their trusty Dwarven friend. -- IJordon (talk) 00:44, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

They're both great. But I'd have to go with Alistair, my brother in arms that followed me through Hell and back. Maybe it's because of the lack of a connection I feel to Hawke as opposed to my Warden, but oh well. HomelyDrugAddict (talk) 01:58, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

Varric. He follows through on killing his own brother. Alistair doesn't even want to leave his sister, because she's making mince pie. Seriously, Varric is always there for you, through thick and thin. Do you think he'd yell at you for killing Isolde? Hell, no! Think about it. Alistair yells at you for killing the most annoying person in all of Thedas!!! By the way, I think they are both great, but Alistair has weaknesses that Varric just doesn't have. LVTDUDE (talk) 02:19, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

Corny as it seems but Varric is by my side while Alistair is in my heart

Alistair wins ;-)

Honestly, this isn't a tough choice for me. Alistair. Sure, like people say, he's a wuss, but if it wasn't for him my Warden couldn't have been queen! And Varric, in all his sarcastic glory, fills in his role in 2, but Alistair will always be my favorite, for sarcasm and his motto-"swooping is bad".

I may be one of the only ones who dislikes varric, he's such an annoying cliche I can't even stand having him in the party because of the random remarks he makes. Alistar is a "wuss" as has been noted but not nearly as annoying.174.45.9.40 (talk) 17:13, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

That's tough man. I love both of 'em, but I'll go with Alistair. I think Varric is funnier, more badass, and a total bro, but Alistair's like a little brother and I'll always have a big soft spot for people I feel like I'm always lovingly watching out for. TKismyname (talk) 17:18, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

Varric. Easy since I don't like Alistair. I would've loved it if Varric had been a companion for the Warden. I wanted to see his reaction to the events of DA:O, and most of my Wardens would've been able to coax the story about Bianca's name out of him. Kestrella (talk) 17:32, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

Y'know, both. Because for me, Alistair in DA:O is what Varric is in DA2. The almost inseparable member of my party, who I take along despite any class advantages or disadvantages, just because I want to see his reactions (and actions). Yes, they're different, but so are the games. To my Warden, Alistair is the same best friend as Varric to my Hawke - Warden and Hawke are different too, after all. Pretty sure Varric and the Warden and Hawke and Alistair would get along perfectly, but sadly we didn't get to see it.The Ranged Man (talk) 21:20, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

Come on, make a choice. Not choosing is as lame as the person who responds to the question "What's your favorite band?" by saying, "I like all kinds of music, I don't have a favorite." Weak. LVTDUDE (talk) 03:44, October 8, 2011 (UTC)

Varric, I have a thing for story tellers. Tommyspa (talk) 03:54, October 8, 2011 (UTC)
