I think they will return. The Dragons were said to be wiped out, but look what happened... Caridin was said to be dead, he wasn't. Branka was said to be dead, but she wasn't. The ashes of Andraste were said to be a myth, but were found? So the return of the Griffons would be a awesome welcome. They are amazing mythological creatures that aren't really put into much fantasy games. I wouldn't say "Lets ride one". But their would presence make the Wardens as mighty as they once were? Someone on this wiki(I believe) interviewed bioware and ask if horses would be in the game and they said there wouldnt be "until they could introduce the horses right" so I doubt they would put something more complicated in anythings possible but I havent heard any information that even hinted that griffons would be in the game.--Gdubs (talk) 15:57, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

have to admit though, it would be pretty damn cool to see them. but i reckon if we see one, it will be a ghoul. as it would be on par with the dragons, ashes and caridin. each one ended up with a battle and playing (maybe in DA3) as a warden killing the symbol of your order infected with the enemy disease of your order would just be epic --Googlemooglemaximus (talk) 16:03, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

It's certainly possible though if we get to ride them it would likely be a cutscene kind of thing. We'd have to get a breeding pair to take care of if we wanted to bring them back from the brink. Population bottleneck could have had some interesting effects on them too. --Aedan Cousland (talk) 17:02, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

I dont want inbred Griffons, thats just wrong.--Gdubs (talk) 17:14, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

It is possible... Though I highly doubt we'll be able to ride on one. Like Gdubs said, I made the question if we would see horses and Ausir interviewed BioWare and they said that it's very complicated. If horses are complicated, imagine Griffons! That doesn't mean I don't want to see... I would love to see Griffons and/or horses in the game. -- Rocketai (talk) 17:23, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, but just a quick question. If they don't have horses then what drags the cargo carts that people use? You know, the ones that are seen next to travelers and merchants. It has those two wooden stacks sticking forward that would be connected to whatever that would pull it. --Drake Valiant (talk) 17:30, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

There are horses in Thedas but we the players don't get to see them. Horses are rare and expensive in Fereldan though and most carts there are pulled by donkey's, mules, or oxen. --Aedan Cousland (talk) 17:32, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. That just reminded me of Old Tegrin and the oxen that was with him. Also reminded me of all the dead oxen that you see next to carts and their ambushed sites.--Drake Valiant (talk) 17:35, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

How about an answer to what happen to them, all we know is what is here Griffons, but it does not tell us how. Anya (talk)17:38, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

The Griffins could have all been killed off by the taint. If their numbers dwindled drastically during the 4th Blight then it's safe to assume that the rest could have been tainted and then finally becoming extinct 200 years after the blight. Or.....they could be hibernating in some big mountain building up their numbers and when the world is in chaos {DA2}, a lone important figure will reawaken them and with their aid bring the world back to peace.--Drake Valiant (talk) 17:45, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

Seeing as how dragon cultists can somehow live with dragons without getting killed I say the grey wardens should try and use dragons as mounts, they would need to find the right size because the normal ones are too small and the High dragons are too big (ora are they?).--Gdubs (talk) 18:52, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

Well, I think we can assume they died out/disappeared around the Fourth Blight, as another contributer pointed out. However, as far as I can remember they never specifically state that the griffins are extinct. I would really like it if the griffins returned, but perhaps as spirits that could appear in the breeding pens or wherever they used to be kept (they said they still have the pens, but they are empty.) I'm not sure the griffins should return as mounts for the Grey Wardens, because the Grey Wardens have changed considerably since the height of their glory 400 years ago and throwing a load of griffins into what is essentially a new Grey Warden society would probably just not work, or there would be massive dissent among the Wardens if only certain Wardens got griffins etc, which would be another undermining factor for an already fallen-from-glory association. But a reappearance of spirits or even actual griffins would be great. If they are spirit griffins I think it would be good if they were accompanied by the spirits of Grey Wardens from the height of their glory, to give advice or fight beside the the player in a certain scenario. If they appear as real griffins, I think a small cutscene of them flying overhead or being sighted from a distance would be good - like a symbol of hope or a good omen. But I would definitely love to see them turn up.

Out of interest, how does everyone spell 'griffin'? I know you can spell it 'griffin' 'griffon' and 'gryphon'.StormTalons (talk) 19:29, September 17, 2010 (UTC)

I find it highly unlikely that griffons will be introduced in DA2 in any form other than in cutscenes. They're supposed to be the mounts of Grey Wardens, to I'd suppose it's something along the lines of Gandalf and the Eagles in LOTR (with certain differences of course) and that if they were to reappear, it'd be them plucking Hawke out of danger (which was already done at Ostagar!). Or it might be in some relation to Hawke's name? ReaperZ (talk) 05:26, September 18, 2010 (UTC)

There are a number of reasons why griffons won’t appear. First of all, as traditional mounts, if we see one and one that is untainted it would be illogically if we can’t ride it.
2nd we can’t ride it, because dragon age is not a full 3D game. Yes it’s graphic is in 3D but it’s “just graphic” I tested it several times and height difference means nothing. All the action still goes on in a 2D plane. If we were allowed to fly we would need a much more powerful engine an engine that supported full 3D, and that is extremely difficult even with simple graphic. Civilization, another favorite game of mine won’t allow sphere maps even in its newest versions, only flat, cylindrical and torus. All these three kinds of map is 2D the difference is merely how the borders are connected. A true spherical map requires 3D. When even a bordish game like Civ can’t do it, an rpg certainly can’t. It would be cool, and I am sure it will happen, but not before I’m 30.
3th. The horses needs to be introduced first. Horses are more simple to make then a 3D map but still really difficult. Let’s start cheering for horses, in DA3 we may be an Orlesian Chevalier that certainly would be cool, especially if our mission would be to invade Ferelden in the name of the emperor.
4th. I don’t like Gray Wardens and really won’t want to see anything that could straighten their order anyway. There is too many things wrong with them Anya. You may not be able to see it, but something smells fishy about there whole operation. I’m glad we wont have to play a warden in the next game, perhaps we can do something really nasty to them, like getting them outlawed in the Free marches that would be cool.-rphb- (talk) 11:20, September 18, 2010 (UTC)
To 2nd - maybe it will be a transport between locations and for cut-scenes
To 3th - the cult of Andraste prayed to the dragon, when all others thought dragons are gone. Maybe the grey wardens lost all griffons, but they were not the only ones, who trained them
To 4th - I don't think to control a griffon you need the darkspawn blood in the body. Yes, grey wardens succeeded in riding, but it don't meen anyone else could not.
But I agree with you - griffons' return doesn't look like a good idea. 91.192.191.221 (talk) 11:48, September 18, 2010 (UTC)
