Irving says that lyrium is the essence of magic or something to that effect in the mage origin story. So Templar abilities could be a form of magic. A person who dosen't have any true magical talent would probably get less benifit from using the lyrium however. Which probably causes the templars memory loss and eventual Semi-tranquility like the templar you find in Howe's dungeon.Swampman03 (talk) 23:54, February 17, 2011 (UTC)

Huh, and I thought this was going to be a thread asking on why the Warden, should he/she choose to become a templar, does not need to take any lyrium to utilize their abilities. Oh, and if you talk to Alistair, he can tell you a lot about being a templar. Don't have the links off hand, though. Sorry. Perhaps I should have been clearer, my apologies. What I meant is this: If we read the new specialization info for Templars in DA2, it clearly states Lyrium is what fuels their power. So, my question then, is it actually required? Or does it just magnify? (Like a bonus of 200 damage to Holy Smite, for example.) If that is the case, it would explain why the Warden and company can use Templar abilities without Lyrium, and it would explain a lot about the Templar reputation. That is what I meant, any thoughts?Croc484 (talk) 01:34, February 18, 2011 (UTC)Croc484 8:33PM February 17, 2011

So, from the new insights we get from the Specialization info, it would appear that Lyrium is not just a Chantry control mechanism, as it states carefully prepared Lyrium builds a magic resistance within the Templars. Theoretically, with the new upgrade-a-talent/spell system, this could also explain how a Templar's powers, such as Holy Smite, could get more powerful over time. Now I know the Blood Mage fanatics will be attacking me soon, but please, on both sides, with a subject like this, let's keep it civil.

-m sorry I am a little confused here. Are you asking a question or simply trying to state a fact? I'm not sure how to respond to your comments based upon the wording you choose :/ Kaiser Von Hawke (talk) 21:20, February 14, 2011 (UTC)

On a somewhat different but related note, what exactly is the deal with templars anyway? They aren't mages, but they do apparently have some kind of ability that most people would class as magical. Yes, their talents only work on mages, I realize this, but that doesn't speak to the templar talents not being magical. The question seems to hinge on lyrium. It would make sense to me if templars derived their abilities from lyrium, but this is specifically stated not to be the case: Alistair states that lyrium only makes templar talents more effective. And he would know this, as he does indeed have access to templar abilities despite never having taken lyrium himself.

So where do templar talents stem from, if they are not magic? And if lyrium is this hyper-addictive substance...why do you hear so much talk about men and women who've been templars for so long that their minds eventually crack from a lifetime of exposure to lyrium...but absolutely no word on the subject as far as mages are concerned, even though it stands to reason that mages get as much or more exposure to lyrium--especially, say, mages who take up fighting as a profession and therefore need to artificially replenish their mana more often? Is the lyrium that mages receive to replenish their mana refined in a different way? What's the deal, honestly?

Irving says that lyrium is the essence of magic or something to that effect in the mage origin story. So Templar abilities could be a form of magic. A person who dosen't have any true magical talent would probably get less benifit from using the lyrium however.
