* PC as [[Rogue]] is I think ideal. Cunning and Dex will be your main stats, with lethality reducing the need for strength only as high as is needed for your equipment. Coercion is also only available for the PC and will benefit directly from cunning. Stealing, lockpicking and stealthing all also benefit from cunning, and you also wont have to bring Leliana or Zevran along as you will nicely fill the physical damage role. The rogue AI is also horrible for positioning for backstabs, and while you could control the NPC rogues to achieve these, it just feels better for me to be fighting from my own shoes.

* [[Wynne]] is a great healer, and she comes loaded up with combat tactics. Invest in every life giving, stat boosting buff you can. Set her tactics to healer and add her taking your strongest lyrium potion when she's < 25% mana to her tactics, and something like a rune of paralysis if self is melee attacked and she becomes a pretty much hands-off healer that will reliably keep your party up with very little use of health potions.
  +
* [[Alistair]] is a great tank. See the above comments about Shale v. Alistair, they're spot on. I would add that you should give him the best, heaviest equipment you can, and add a tactic of taking the most powerful health pot if he is < 25% health. He's pretty much a hands-off tank for me that keeps aggro under control pretty well.

* There is too much AOE needed in this game to not then also take [[Morrigan]]. She makes a great offensive/support mage, dealing moderate to strong single target damage and easily turning the tides of a fight through the sleep/waking nightmare combo, mass paralysis, mind blast, etc. With these, even 20 vs 4 fights feel like there aren't many enemies to fight.

TL;DR : PC as DW Rogue (Dex/Cunning), Wynne as Healer (Magic/Will), Alistair as Tank (Str), Morrigan as Offensive/Support Mage (Magic).

im tryin to build an great party but ive run in to a dilemma, i cant decide who to put in my last spot. what i have now is my character a mage, i usually stand back and fire various spells; Shale, of course my tank; morrigan who both shoots spells from back and fights up close; and now this is where i cant decide should i have alistair (tank, fighter), leliana who could open locks and be an archer, or zevran a dual wielding fighter and asassin. im leaning toward alistair or leliana but idk if i shoul have another ranged fighter in leliana.

I would suggest taking Leliana - if for no other reason, than so you can open those pesky locked chests. My current party is Leliana (spec'ed for DW/melee), Wynn (healer/buffer mage) and Morrigan (offensive mage) and myself as a DW Warrior/tank. Seems to work pretty well, except for boss fights, I have to take control of Morrigan to cast/shoot spells from afar and avoid direct skirmishes. Bipolarattorney 19:29, December 28, 2009 (UTC)

i agree with taking leliana just to open the chests or take sten.i find him handy for boss battles.my current party is alistair as my tank, wynn asmy healing mage,me as a duel weapon user.i switch between sten and leliana depending on what boss im fighting.

Well, while my PC was a rogue with nicely developed lock picking skills I went with Wynne (as a healer), Zevran (damage dealer) and Alistair (a very nice tank he makes). Now, that my PC is a warrior focused on dealing damage rather than recieving it, I take Leliana with me and switch between Zevran and Alistair depending on what is awaiting me. The general tip is: have a healer, have someone to take damage and someone to deal damage, and a lock picker - also neutralizes traps. Later in game, when Morrigan is nicely upgraded, she works wonder at crowd control with her AOE spells. Mass paralysis is awesome! *_*

I would definitely suggest changing your tank from shale to Alistair. At later levels in game, I believe that Alistair (preferably with Templar and Champion specializations) is much more versatile than Shale. My Alistair is currently lvl 22 and can tank like no other while also doing great damage, something that Shale can struggle to do at the same time. Also, while Shale can have great resistances to one elemental form, Alistair can have great resistances overall as well as good mental and physical resistances due to Templar and Champion abilities. Alistair can also buff your party while tanking, something Shale cannot do. Basically, I prefer Alistair =). Besides this, I also play a mage, currently lvl 23 preparing to do the post-Landsmeet areas. My party which has been much the same for most of the game has been myself for overall ranged and melee dps (Arcane warrior), Wynne for healing (essential, take spirit healer to the max), Alistair for tanking, and either Zevran or Sten depending on the situation. 99% of the time I use Zevran but for some instances, such as the High Dragon, Flemeth, or large fights with no chests, having a hard hitting off tanking warrior around is very useful. Well that's my two cents hope it helps you out...

Not to mention the super usefull Alistair's talent which dispell all magical effects in the area. It's very good when you fight mages and they start casting jinxes all overe the place...
