Merging money articles[]

I don't know if people don't look first or just believe it isn't related but srsly.  Hollowness | Talk | Contr 02:19, January 30, 2010 (UTC)

I popped a note on Talk:Money agreeing that work is needed here before I spotted this forum topic. I agree this stuff should be merged and tidied. I think there is the potential for a really handy article on the gameplay aspects of financial management in DA:O (ooh, doesn't that sound thrilling!). Out of the three options we have, I'd go for "Money" as the title of the merged article unless people have a better idea. To me, "Currency" is more suited to the lore aspect of money, and would just be a section on the overall money page, and "Gold Farming" is not a term I've ever come across or would think of searching for. Zoev talk 02:45, January 30, 2010 (UTC)
Well I purposed the Merge with Gold Farming and Money, Loleil did the request with Currency, I just added all three for dramatic effect and if it was still an issue with Money and Currency, maybe since we a have 3 lets decide on 1 or 2, sooner than later, since it happened for #3 today. :P  Hollowness | Talk | Contr 02:53, January 30, 2010 (UTC)

I also tihnk "Money" would be the best topic. One night, i was hoping to find a page about Making Additional Money because I wanted to buy that 128Gold staff from the Mage Circle, but my Gold just went over 1,000 and I didn't wanna have less than 1k at that point, so i searched for Money, and there's none.

I think Redirecting is a Great idea though. Redirect these words: Money, Cash, Gold, Gold Farming, Soverigns, & maybe Currency? (well i still think Currency is a different topic)

I also proposed a merge from Potent Lyrium Potion with the rest of the pages. -- tierrie talk contr 17:20, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

i dont think we should. Currency Page is about.. well.. Currency used in Dragon Age. Money Page, on the other hand, is about Making & Accumulating Money in Dragon Age.

Also agree with keeping pages separate, and keeping this topic called Money. And now that I've read Currency, I think I'll just fix this little Bronze/Copper problem we've got going here! DAO gold stackJellybug 13:50, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

Herwin 12:38, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

Why not change the topic of the Money page to Economics or Managing Your Money?

Fycan 13:23, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
I thought it'd be hard for ppl to search and find that exact keyword?
Zoev, says that Currency is more about lore and this article is more about game play and that they shouldn't be merged. I think that Gold Farming should be merged into this article.  Hollowness | Talk | Contr 12:46, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
Yea, merged or linked. I wouldn't have known that such topic like Gold Farming exist if you hadnt just mention it right there.. Fycan 13:20, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
Prolly cause it was created like 2 days after this one, I was like huh, do people even check to see if similar articles exists? I saw it get made, put a merge tag on it and wrote in the forums about it.  Hollowness | Talk | Contr 13:40, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
I agree that this article should be the main article for all matters of money, lore or gameplay. I would want to make sure all iterations of money/currency re-direct here. HiredGoon 17:11, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

Re-indent I would prefer to see two articles:

  • a factual article (e.g. the current Currency), which just states the facts
  • a guide article (e.g. the current Money)), which advises players on how to earn more of it

This would keep the boring (but necessary stuff) distinct from the fascinating (and controversial) suggestions. I recommend that instead of merging, we:

I expect the main article to remain relatively static, while the guide article will undergo revisions (as people find ways to improve/standardize guides for this wiki).   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 07:01, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

From Talk:Lyrium Potions for Profit[]

Note: Zoev copied this from Talk:Lyrium Potions for Profit talk page, Zoev talk 13:07, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

This was written with the intention of consolidating the information on the one avenue we have for 'legit' infinite gold into one place. I originally thought it might belong on the Money page, but there's too much detail here. Other pages that could benefit some by linking here include Exploits, General Tips, the relevant Lyrium Potion pages, and their Recipe pages. My draft is a rewording of all contributions that went onto the Money page, as well as those on the Gold Farming page, plus all the econo-nerd stuff I did in Excel. DAO gold stackJellybug 19:29, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

Page Name[]

Should also note that I didn't think hard enough about the name of this page, given the impending release of an expansion to the game. It's possible that there may be other methods, perhaps they should go here, and a more general name might be best. Profit? Profitable Ventures? DAO gold stackJellybug 04:25, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

It's good work! No suggestions for the name, I'm afraid, but the information and the presentation is very well done. Tchos 04:27, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

There's four other pages with this same information - Gold Farming, Money and Exploits#Potent Lyrium Potion and Potent Lyrium Potion. Since this method only works with Potent Lyrium Potion, merge article into Potent Lyrium Potion and redirect all the other sections to that page. -- tierrie talk contr 04:32, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Actually, this method works just fine for the Greater Lyrium Potion and the Lyrium Potion if you start from the Dwarf Noble Origin. And with that background, doing Potent Lyrium Potions is crazy profit. I'm happy to clean up other pages and redirect somewhere, but putting this on a single potion page doesn't seem to be ideal. DAO gold stackJellybug 05:11, February 5, 2010 (UTC)
Your appeal made sense to me. As long as you clean up the rest of the pages by redirecting the appropriate subsections to your page using {{Main|}} template, I am okay with it. I'm unconvinced that Lyrium Potions for Profit is a good title and I know you're having the same concerns. If I think of something better I'll suggest it here. -- tierrie talk contr 05:57, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

As for the page name, I do need ideas. The notion bouncing around the Talk:Money page is that Money will be shorter one-line tips on how to accumulate gold. Lyrium Potions for Profit (or whatever it's called) would detail methods to infinitely increase the money supply 'outside' of your normal questing, killing, looting, and selling. And a third page will probably be needed to highlight which quests or other 'normal gameplay' activities that either a) give great income, b) give good income for a little time invested, or c) give decent income in the early-game, where money is in real short supply. Currently this is a quickly expanding list of quests that pay well, but its cluttering the Money page. So the distinction is Money, general page for accumulating; Profitable Quests, for a list of things to do early to quickly get much of the money the game has to offer; and Profit, for squeezing more gold than is available out of the game. I just made up those names and am too sleepy to tell how good/bad they are.

So, for example, I might change the Exploits#Potent Lyrium Potions or General Tips#Crafting for money is a bad idea sections from their current text to read:

Infinite Gold[]

Main article: Lyrium Potions for Profit (or whatever we're calling it) details the only legitimate method of infinitely increasing the amount of money available in this otherwise very tight-fisted game.

Thanks again,

Continued discussion[]

I've just copied some stuff from Loleil's talk page that User:Jellybug had alerted me to and will try to put notes on the talk pages of appropriate articles so we can have all the discussion in one place. I could see the point in having separate legit means of making money and money exploit pages if there were many exploits, but it doesn't sound as though there are. So my current feeling, despite anything I may have said to the contrary before, is that a single "Money" page might be best (this would include sections explaining the currency used in the game and an exploits section), with redirects set up for other things people may search for (eg Currency and Gold Farming) and links from pages like Potent Lyrium Potion, Potent Lyrium Potion Recipe, Exploits, etc. I don't have hugely strong feelings about this, so will go with the majority view. Zoev talk 12:38, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Money is certainly looking like the main page for in-game economics, and I think a consensus is there for keeping Currency separate. But Money is quickly becoming cluttered beyond necessity. I'd suggest two sub-pages, linked to Money but there to go into more detail. I just finished Lyrium Potions for Profit, which will turn out to be poorly named if we're given new legit opportunities for infinite gold in the expansion, but the purpose is to be the one-stop-shop for all methods of turning a profit beyond the 'normal' gold supply available in the game. Pages that would link to the Profit page (in addition to Money) could probably include General Tips, Exploits, 3 of the lyrium potion (and maybe recipe) pages, the Dwarf Noble Origin, and Herbalism. I also think it can be the redirect for the current Gold Farming page. The second page that I'd suggest is one that lists those quests/activities which give a relatively high payoff. Money already has a growing list of well-paying quests, which might grow enough to warrant its own page? DAO gold stackJellybug 12:41, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Gold Farming has been redirected to Lyrium Potions for Profit, but I'll wait on setting up links with the Main template on other pages (General Tips, Exploits, etc.) until we're decided here. DAO gold stackJellybug 13:56, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

OK, after a hard look at Money, I think I'm gonna disagree with myself on a couple things. The whole page could easily be re-worked to merge Currency, have a large section "Accumulating Money" with many sub-sections "Infinite Money", "Dwarf Noble", "High-Paying Quests", "Stealing", "Coercion", "Lock Picking", etc. I think the quest list would be fine in its own sub-section, rather than on a separate page, since most of its content will rely on the full quest walkthrough pages. I think I still like Lyrium Potions for Profit as a separate page, but I'm very biased. DAO gold stackJellybug 13:56, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

I've taken a stab at it, to clarify what I'm proposing. Check out User:Jellybug/Money Sandbox. I've merged the Currency page with the start of Money (with a few minor wording changes), and laid out an outline of what the rest of the page might look like. I figure we should keep any discussion of it here. DAO gold stackJellybug 16:03, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

My thoughts
  1. Money is moved to "Money Making Guide" (redirect left behind)
  2. Gold Farming and lyrium potion get merged into Money Making Guide
  3. Currency left as is, as it deals with the "in-game" elements of money
I think that's about it, but apologies if I've missed something. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 23:33, February 5, 2010 (UTC)
I volunteer Loleil as the admin to make the final call on this. For the record, I would like to see an everything-in-one article, as per Jellybug's revised suggestion but also including lyrium potions for profit. If that article did end up being too unwieldy, my feeling is that sub-topic article(s) could easily be created from whichever section(s) were too long at that stage and be linked into the overall article using the {{Main}} template. I shall now forever hold my peace on this topic! Zoev talk 12:27, February 6, 2010 (UTC)
Heh, thanks for the nomination Zoev. I'll see what I can do. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 07:13, February 8, 2010 (UTC)
Made some changes, though I've left Currency alone for now as the guide is so "out of world" it seemed a little dissonant to add it in there. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 08:01, February 8, 2010 (UTC)
